ok so the number 3 piston is melted in my car due to a lean injector. well so i took the top end off along with the turbo. and i started to take the oil pan off and ran into the transfer case i can feel the 2 bolts but i can't even get them with a ratching wrench so. do i have to pull the engine drop the transfer case or is there some trick. if any one can help it would be appericated.

There are 6 bolts that hold the TCase on if I remember correctly...

4 Main bolts and 2 smaller bolts... The 4 main bolts are around the input shaft of the transfer case.. 2 on the top two on the bottom....

The 2 smaller bolts are along the output shaft of the TCase.. I'm at work so I can't go look at mine to be sure..

I pulled the engine, transmission and transfer case out as a unit so I can't give you any tips or tricks..

If you had a piston melt on you I wouldn't just replace the piston... Believe me doing it half-assed will not pay off in the long run... Go ahead and pull the motor and do a complete rebuild if you can afford it... spending all the time and energy to replace a $50 piston only to have a bearing spin on you or T-belt break after you get it all together will be heart-wrenching.

I removed the Tcase with a Ratchet and a 6in extension for the bolt on the top along the output shaft then just dropped it down to the ground. Watch out that thing is pretty heavy and you will probally have to pry a little to get it off. You will also have to take the dust sheld off the engine side of the tranny there are 3 bolts 12mm and 10mm. Also make sure when taking the bolts out of the oil pan you pay careful attention because there are three bolts that are differant than the rest they are under the T-belt. Be sure to put them back in the correct place. I learned that the hard way and now have a nice little groove in my T-belt. Good luck.

FWIW, you don't have to drain the T-case to drop it. Just make sure the drive shaft stays in or you'll have a nasty puddle to clean up.

I am guessing you've already dropped the exhaust to get the pan off. Once the exhaust is out of the way getting to the t-case bolts just takes that 6" extension like mentioned earlier. Having it off when you're doing the timing belt is nice too if you still have a balance shaft to properly align (assuming you aren't yanking the engine for a rebuild.) :thumb:

thanks for all the help. i am not just changin the 1 piston, i am putting in 2g pistons king racing silicone berrings b shaft deletion new cams egr eliminator all metal gaskets. just one more question so removing the t case is the only way to go. so all there is one input shaft leading into the trans, and how about seals and gaskets are these going to need to be replaced, and if so can i get them at a auto parts store, or just use rtv.
