Well I've built several DSMS over the years, the last one being a White 91 tsi. Well this one didn't work out to my liking so I part that all the way out and scrapped the shell. I saved a couple parts from this knowing that I would build this one because I picked up at the same time I was performing a partout.
Got this 1997 Talon for a song since a local guy was moving to Carolina and needed the $ at the time. Was nearly 100% stock with some good maintenance: alt, hg, tb, water pump, arp studs, newer head, o2 sensor, brake pads, lower control arms, southbend clutch, wideband, boost gauge, hd mbc, 1g bov and tons of misc oem parts and ss bolts everywhere. The previous owner loved OEM and even replaced that gas cap door latch that didn't pop open ha. He also did ton's of work powder coating just about every bracket. So much dedication could not be seen to go to some kid that would just abuse her so I picked it up with 106k miles and zero rust anywhere.

The original plan was to keep it all stock and do only minor mods. Well this changed very fast because after only 20miles of driving it the cam bolt snapped and let go of the cam gear. You know that means....bent valves....ugh. I did not hold the previous owner responsible as this is sort of a fluke accident that couldn't really be prevented although I still think it was some bad lifters.

So now for the build! I know that some would just say swap the head and be done but this turned into a project. For the past 4 months I've been tinkering away getting her ready for this season, here is what I've done thus far...
First thing was to take off that head and see what the damage was. I ended up trading this for a rebuilt 1g head totally skipping replacing the bent valves. Just to be safe I had this checked and needed a couple valves as well, oh wells. But atleast now I know for sure I have a good head. For those confused here I decided that for this build I was going for a little more top end / hp rather than the torque of the 2g head. For this I referred to the RRE site for the swap. Luckly from my partout I still had everything I needed! I had the tstat housing, water pipe, radiator pipe, freshly blasted intake manifold, and throttle body.

I ended up removing the black firewall matt for a cleaner look and tucked the wire harness while everything was apart. Also I removed the abs, egr, and the rest of the a/c components. Also removed the clutch line accumulator and replaced with an ss clutch line along with the skate bearing into the shifter cables.

Grabbed a great deal on an old CF hood. I will be spraying this black as I don't care for the ricey cf look and attention it gets. Since this decision I also decided to sell off my dnp manifold. It was so nice but in trying to keep this on somewhat of a low budget I could use this $ for something like dsmlink
I was also worried about the heat generated from this to melt my hood, since I had an immense about of heat from running it on the 1g. I also mocked up a fmic and piping I had laying around. I have since changed the cold side with a super short route that looks like a snake and sprayed it all black. It looks really nice. I don't know what kind of fmic this is but it worked great on a 2g that I bought a long while back that I upgraded.

While the head was off and all I also decided to put some cams in this build. Since I am sticking to a smaller turbo for this build (16g) I read an immense about cam setups and came to the conclusion that the 264 intake and 272 exhaust was the BEST. Because of the budget again I sent in come nice 1g cams to get the regrinded by Delta in Washington. Highly recommend them!. I got these done for only $195, they have since then upped their price. I then had to tap the intake cam for my 2g cas, so scarey as I've broken a tap before. I may switch to the 1g cas down the road but we'll see. Also using some evoviii lifters
