Well so far its going pretty well Im just stuck in the curing/drying phase.

Now so far I used 3 Coats of Rustoleum Metallic Black for the base then I used about 4-5 Heavy Coats of VHT after letting it dry in set intervals.

Now VHT says that I need to bake it but my parents think we are going to get cancer if I bake it in the oven. Can I just wait 48 hours for it to cure and then throw it on the engine with a good bit of driving to bake it? Or what other alternatives do I have?

Can I have it soak in the sun for a day to "sun bake" the cover?

I have also heard that with the vht wrinkle if you do the Engine Bake the wrinkles don't come out as tight is this true?

Thanks to all you painting pros
Armin

If you used a good self etching base coat just through it on the engine after it has time to properly dry, and drive it around. It will get hot enough to cure.

Will it still "wrinkle" Nice? Most say it wont be as tight of a wrinkle but I don't know which one to go on. Honestly it seems a bit sketchy to bake it in my oven where I bake my food you know?

It will produce some fumes, but if you have a good ventilation system it won't to bad. I baked one in my oven, kitchen smelled funny, but I couldn't smell it in the living room at all. That said I have a good ventilation system on my stove.

I dunno about the wrinkle thing, I usually just go with gloss or metallic colors.

Yea those are easier from what I have been reading basically

Differences

VHT
24-48 Hour Dry time
Recommends 30 mins baking

And you know which ones are the wrinkle ones correct?

Other colors

12 hours to dry and good to go

I painted my vc with the black VHT wrinkle. And i just let it dry in the sun, and by letting it dry, it started to wrinkle. Also by putting it on and driving it, the heat from the engine helped it cure.

I used the black VHT wrinkle too. Let it air dry for a couple days because it remains tacky for that long at least. Then gently install it on the car and drive it. It will bake on the car and look just fine.

The car should bake it on there pretty good. Ive baked my valve cover and I wouldnt recommend it.

I work with black wrinkle on a daily base, if you bake it, it looks 1000 times better. 3-4 thin coats 5-10 min. in between coats, let it sit for 30min then bake on 300 for 30 mins. Let it cool down(if you touch the wrinkle while its hot it will smear) and the wrinke is a finished product.

^^This works best.

But installing it and driving around will heat it up enough also. Baking it in an oven makes the oven smell for a while, so if you do that, try to do it in an oven you don't use much ;)

I painted a valve cover with the VHT black wrinkle last summer. All I did was let it dry for a couple days and the wrinkle turned out ok. My opinion, just let it air dry for better wrinkles.

I too used VHT wrinkle paint on my valve and timing cover, let it sun dry, came out perfect.
