Paint above driver/passenger windows peeling

Got the rails off and got the first coat of Plastidip on. At first it looks like the Plastidip didn't like the chrome, but I think as it dries it looks better and better. Hopefully it doesn't peel off in one strip going down the highway one day ;) Three or four more coats and I'll post pics!

Alright, so after 5 coats, it didn't come out like I wanted it to. I'm going to peel the Plastidip off in the morning and sand the life out of the rail to get every single little chip off, then re-Plastidip it with 3 or 4 coats.

Thanks for updating, yes if you can post pics :)

And is that the original paint? One day I'd love to get that color, its my favorite DSM OEM color.

Yep it's called Barcelona Red Pearl Metallic I believe. It looks AMAZING in the sun!

About the liquid electrical tape thing, YEA! I just went outside to peel off the Plastidip and start over and it feels exactly like electrical tape, and it looks like electrical tape in my little piles haha

I'm going to degrease the rails and put some fresh coats of Plastidip on. Hopefully I can get them on the car before dark to get some pictures.

Completed! Not 100% what I thought it would turn out to be, but close enough!

I sanded it really good the second time, and smoothed out the rubber/plastic lips that were basically on there for good. I sanded them until I couldn't feel the line between them and the chrome. The rail on the left was BEFORE sanding, the one on the right was AFTER sanding.

Put the first coat of Plastidip on thin, as I've read.

The 4th coat of Plastidip nearly dry. Not as OEM as I was hoping but it's WAY better than the chrome.

Reminds me of some cheap spray bedliner right now... maybe I did something wrong or just suck with spray paint but I followed the directions and waited between coats! Whatever, better than chrome. :thumb:

Why couldn't you get the leftover plastic off? I would have gotten it smoother with a dremel but I speak without direct experience.

I probably could gotten it smoother, but I didn't have any other tools to work with really. It works and looks better so I'm happy!

Right on, it does look 100x better for sure though, I was just asking. I will be doing this sometime soon in the actual summer, any additional tips?

Hmm, no tips really besides sanding the chrome to rough it up a little because I did this twice, and when it was smooth it was a "splotchier" looking finish, however, when I peeled it off it came off NICE since it was smooth under it. The first two coats of Plastidip should be thinner, and then you can start to lay it on thicker. The more coats the better.
