i have looked but can't find any solid answers.

My problem is that i have a thin layer of sludge i think is oil that rests on the valve cover in-between the sparkplugs. No oil leaks anywhere else. From what i have read it may be a cracked valve cover... got a replacement and still happens. So that's not the problem. Could be a bad valve cover seal/gasket or something. I just put a new gasket seal and spark plug seals in about a year ago, and it still gets dirty. Could it be the pcv valve (or whatever that tube is that comes from the valve cover to the intake manifold) ? There's usually more towards the passenger side of the valve cover guide. i wipe it away and clean it up, and it comes back. Could it just be something as simple as a bad EGR tube that isn't shooting the gasses to the intake manifold and it spurts it onto the valve cover? i have took my throttle body off and looked at it. it doesn't look that bad. i have been running this throttle body for about 4 years or so and it looks almost as clean as when i first put it on.

Any thoughts or opinions as to what it could be? the rest of the valve cover is fine. Just that little groove where the plug wires go.

Change the gasket and while the valve cover is off, inspect it closely for cracks. Use RTV only on the valve cover side of the new gasket. Look at the oil cap too, it could possibly be leaking from there.

i too had oil build-up on the Valve cover, replaced the gaskets, which helped a little, but what did it for me was the oil cap. Now remember, the oil cap (at least on my 4g63) is also a breather, so its almost normal for a little bit of oil spray to get let out, or at least i would think. Try a new oil cap, only 7 or 8 bucks at your local Checker, or autozone.

+1 to what Eeeeky said. I had the same problem with oil build up in the spark plug area of the valve cover and it was a leaky oil cap. I have the 4G63 but I would imagine the same problem could happen on either engine. Over time the rubber gasket under the oil cap gets hard from the hot/cold cycle and doesn't seal very well. Try replacing the cap or you may be able to get the rubber seal that goes underneath. I know you can for the 4G oil caps. Good luck.
