As of lately whenever I accelerate hard I get a huge amount of smoke that comes out of the tailpipe. Sometimes it's during I accelerate and other times it comes out as a huge cloud right after I'm done accelerating. I checked my IC pipes the other day and I noticed there was a nice amount of oil in them. What could be causing this?

Thanks. :thumb:

Your turbo is dead. You should check it for shaft play just to be sure, but I'm almost positive its dead. Mine did that same thing when the oil seal was going out, there was about a quart of oil in my IC and coated all in my pipes, and about 1/2'' of shaft play. Time to upgrade!!

Damn. It spools pretty good, though. I've noticed that it doesn't hit full spool until later RPMs though.

I have the same thing.. my guess was either the stupid T-too-small going out or it was my valve seals causing the smoke, then I remembered my car had ~115k miles and I beat the piss outta that stupid turbo ;)

Yea, when mine went out, spool wasn't really affected that much...that is unitl the blades starting trimming themselves down on the exhaust housing. Finding metal shavings out of your exhaust is never fun

How old is the turbo? I'd look into getting it replaced pretty soon...you don't want a bunch of junk circulating through your oil if that is the case.

I actually bought it from a friend for 100 dollars. It's a sm16g. He did some porting to it, also. I believe he pulled it off a car in a junkyard. When I got it, it had very little shaft play.

Well at least your not out much. If the wheels are still good, you could send it to Slowboy to be rebuilt for $200. If you want to do it yourself, I think the kit is like $150. That or upgrade the turbo to something a bit bigger.

Yea, I may just look for a new turbo. I heard an Evo3 isn't much of an upgrade from a sm16g. So maybe an internal wastegate 50trim.

Did you guys have alot of smoke come out of the tailpipe under heavy acceleration, also?

i really am not sure what that could be, except oil seal on the turbo, BUT almost every dsm i've seen or any turbo car for that matter that isnt brand new, whenever u punch it theres always a puff of black smoke. I'm not sure if its bad, but i dont think it could be good. I know my car does it, and my turbo has a little shaft play, whatever though i'm waitin for it to go out so i can get a evo3 b16g :)

Yea, it's not a puff of smoke. More like a cover the whole street cloud of smoke.

i know how ya feel. mine started that about 2 weeks ago. that first huge cloud of smoke was scary. im waiting on my evo3 16g now, mine has 161k on it and as far as i know its the original 14b turbo, so i think it was its time to go.

Sucks and it's hella embarassing, huh? Does it have a strange smell to it?

Yea, it really is a godawful smell...very embarassing. I was rollin around and some guy was drooling over my car then took off. He was in some sebring, so I couldn't let him pass me. Needless to say, he was covered in smoke. Very very thick smoke.

Yea, most turbo DSMs I know of puff a bit of black smoke at WOT as well, but thats just unburnt gas, or carbon deposits in the exhaust that the massive blow from the turbo shoots out the exhaust. Quite a bit different from oil. I notice the black smoke thing alot more on 1g turbos though.
