Hey i just started haveing this prblem couple days ago. When i turn on my 96 GSX its fine makes a little noise but goes away in bout a minute. couple days ago i started hearing a kind of grinding type noise when i accelerate. I also noticed at that point that whenever i stop at a light or for more then a couple seconds my oil gauge drops to near the L????? and this noise sounds bad not ot sure what it is. The oil gauge goes back to the middle when i start to accelerate. any ideas? I cehcked oil level, looks right!! any one help me?? [email protected]

Just a couple thoughts: The stock oil pressure gauge on the 2g cars is pretty notorious for going down at idle and picking back up during acceleration and cruising. Mine's done it since I got it four years ago, and I know others have the same issue. As for the grinding noise... I guess the first thing I'd check is the turbo for shaft play. It's so hard diagnosing sounds over the net.

Grinding:
Most likely transmission related. Take the car to a shop and get them to do a tranny service on it. Do a search on here to find out the correction trans fluid to use and the amount. Alot of people have good success with Syncromesh/Redline mix.
Or you have a small domesticated animals stuck in your wheel well.
Oil level:
Your oil pump is driven off of your drive belts. It will pump more oil as the engine speed increase. Low oil pressure at idle is normal. I have 13 psi (with balance shafts) at idle and over 100 psi on a cold North Dakota morning startup.
Driving normally I get about 40 somethingish psi. Soo.... moral of the story, low oil pressure at idle is normal.
The "ticking" sound you hear at start up is the oil trying to lubricate your engine. That's not so normal, but can be in some cases. If you just switched from Mineral to Synthetic without gradually transferring it's normal. Not good, but normal. It's a slow process that takes place over about 3 oil changes.
Also, if it's been a while and your oil is broken down then it's not properly coating your engine parts. You need an oil change. Remember, just because you havn't driven 3,000 miles doesn't mean your car doesn't need an oil change. Oil losses it's viscosity in 3 months time. If you've had the same oil for 3 months, change it. I've went through 2 oil changes on two seperate occassions where I didn't even reach 500 miles.
