Cranbrook,
Hey guys, I have a 1990 tsi FWD and recently noticed that my car was leaking some oil. I put it up on a hoist and had a look to find out my oil cooler line was leaking. I looked around for a part shop that could get one and none of them could. So i did some more reading and came up with the fact that you can just loop a hose on your oil filter housing. My question is, How is this gonna affect how the car runs...Im not exactly sure what the oil cooler does for that matter. If You DSM wisemen could give a brief explanation of what it does, and then tell me what would happen to loop the oil filter housing that would be great. Thanks alot and hope to hear soon!

Unless you plan on driving this car like a grandma or strictly for commuting, I highly recommend you either replace those oil lines or upgrade to an aftermarket cooler with new AN fittings and lines. Of course if you don't see temperatures above 90F then maybe you could get away with it, but I still don't see a reason not to run with an oil cooler.

Go to autozone or advance get a brakeline 24" in lenth, get a tubing bender and a flairing tool. Bend it to match the one on the car put some thread sealer on the fitting and put it on. Thats the cheapest way to go its like $70 from mitsubishi and only works for a stock turbo. I had the same problem.

to answer your question of wha the oil cooler does, it acts much like your intercooler. the oil is pumped into the cooler and heat disapates off of it just like in your radiator. this help to keep oil temps down. obviouly this helps greatly as the turbo super hets your oil. By keeping the temps down the viscosity of you oil is high and thus gives better lubrication and protection for your engine and turbo bearings.
