My car started missfiring few days ago, so I decided to change the spark plugs. I bought some NGK Iridium-Platinum and while taking the old ones out I noticed few drops of oil around them. This was on cylinders 1,3,and 4. The 2nd one was dry. There was few drops of oil on the part of the cable that goes onto the spark plug, as well. After changing plugs, car started running normal like before.
I'm thinking that seals around the plugs are bad, but I wanted to see if there are any other causes for this.

Thx.

P.S. I have a 4g64 engine.

You need to change the seals under the valve cover, as that leaking oil offers a great ground path for your spark to follow instead of jumping the gap on the electrode. Also it is pretty well become a given that you over bought on your plugs and would find better performance with a good set of standard NGK plugs. (BTW, this doesn't just apply to turbo motors, have found this out on every Mitsu vehicle I have owned.)

thx for the response gotlag

well i went to NAPA and they got this list of plugs, so the guy goes like these are the best...so i pay $55 for a set and put them in :)
the car does run a little bit better with those, and i don't think they have a spark i believe it's a laser iridium or somethin like that
but again you might be right about the standard NGK's...

i'll replace those seals as soon as I can, before the oil messes up the new plugs too

I am sure he meant the plugs. Them counter guys love to sell those things. I Have owned many cars ad built many more. From Lotus Esprit's and too many 3000gt's to count. The $1.49 NGK plugs have always netted me the best performance, wether it was on the dyno or the track.

55 for the plugs only
they were like 13 something a piece, reason i bought them is because a mechanic said they are the best

Yea those Iridiums are one of the very best plugs, but not unless you have a $4000+ motor in there. Unless you're running some really high boost, high octane fuel, and a wicked ignition system, then a plain ol' NGK is going to do the same thing. You don't really gain any benefits from those high dollar plugs unless you have something that's going to put them to work.

i guess you guys are right...but i'll keep them for now and see how they do
next time i'll just get standard ngk's
