Normal wear or something else?

So since I already had the car down for a head rebuild, I decided to pull the trans and try to find the source of the 2-3/4 grind I was getting. I didn't see anything that looked obviously worn or broken, except for this:

Is this normal wear? It doesn't look that way.

Also, I see a lot of lines inside the case, like so:

Are they things I should be worried about?

The lines from the case are from the casting process. The center diff looks fine from the outside, but you will find out a lot more if you actually open it up.

I was actually just out looking at those (after referencing the handy service manual) and I don't see any damage or wear. They move up and down just like they should. At this point I am most likely going to put it all back together and look at things like cables and the master/slave cylinders. The trans seems solid.

So I am actually putting the trans back together, and while the 1/2 synchro moves like butter, the 3/4 synchro feels a bit stiff. No signs of wear or damage, but it isn't as easy to move as the 1/2. Is this a lubrication issue? Or a sign of something being off?

Also, and I'm not sure if this is even a problem, but when 1/2/3 are engaged, I can still spin the gear stacks. I can't in 4th.

Lastly, how much RTV do I need for a good seal? I think I used way too much the first time around.

you need to make surew the syncros arent flatlined. i worn syncro will still more fine jus grind like a b***H.Also check you 1-2 n 3-4 hub sliders for wear

ps go light on the rtv n use GRAY ONLY!!! the cases r actually a machine finish your jus sealing any inprefections

Good advice. Thanks. I took it apart and re-rtv'ed it. I used WAY TOO much haha.

True, but visual inspection didn't reveal anything broken or obviously worn. The gearbox as a whole was surprisingly new-looking.

You need to look at the service manual, and measure the syncros with a feeler gauge to see if they're still within spec. Looking at them and sliding them back and forth tells you nothing unless you're "Super Transmission Guy", and can measure them by eye.

Judging by your first post, you are not.

Ps. How much sealant, is also covered in the service manual.

I wouldn't call myself super anything, especially when it comes to these cars. Point well taken.
