Ok so my Trans is making a noise only in cold starts. Its a very loud noise like grinding, or if something was loose. It is as loud as my exhaust! Anyways, this noise only happens when its cold out. When i push in the clutch the noise stops, when the car gets warm the noise stops. If i let go of the clutch the noise appears. I need some help figuring out what it could be? Thanks!

Checked fluid level? Or perhaps it has the wrong fluid?

Although, usually when you have a noise that reacts to the clutch pedal being depressed or not it's likely to be the throwout bearing. But I don't think it matters if it's cold out or not, the throwout bearing usually sounds when you let go of the clutch regardless of temp.

I need more transmission fluid, so it might be that. not to sure though. The throwout bearing sounds like it can be that too

Add the fluid that you are missing and see if it goes away. Keep us posted.

Does it do it when you start your car for the first little bit?? If so mine was doing that as well. I called Lucas and spoke with a rep to see if they had something compatible with our transmission. Their Auto trans stabilizer is made to work with chrysler atf+4 transmission fluid. :thumb: It says it on the bottle as well.
Pulled the fill plug and fluid spilled out due to not lowering the jack enough to level the car out. :banghead: Quickly lowered car and topped her back off with Lucas. Tank of gas later and all is well.

Hope something like this resolves the issue and you do not have to pull the tranny apart.

yeah it only happens for like the first 3 min, only when the car is not warm. and only in cold starts. Also when i push the clutch the noise stops, then when i let go of the clutch it comes back. So hopefully its only the fluid

Then some fluid SHOULD help resovle this. I stopped my a trans shop the other day that was next to a machine shop I was considering. The guy knew what I was talking about with out transmission being "special" ROFL. According to him, if the clutch is pressed in and you hear the noise, that is when it is the throw out bearing. He went on to say that a fluid change would help, but if the noise percist, then he wanted me to bring my car back and let him hear the noise. He honestly said it was most likely nothing major, but if it persist after new fluid and it's had time to take affect, it is probably nothing major. Could even be as simple as something vibrated minutely out of place.

Let me know.

On the drivers side of your 5sp gearbox there is a cover. If you take the cover off, there is strip pof metal in the hole that you can slide out and clean if necessary.Im not sure exactly what it does, but it spins around and I think it pumps oil up to the top of trans. If your fluid is dirty and broken down, it will make noise when you 1st start it up.Every one of my 420A's made that noise before I put in new oil.It helps if you use chrysler ATF-4 with a little lucas. After I fill mine to spec with the ATF-4,I pull out the speed sensor and put in about a half cup of lucas.(use 2' of 1" heater hose and a funnel)

Possible to get a pic of this cover and strip of metal you are talking about?? :sneaky:

I'm at 110k - debating on which clutch to get and going to flush and fill the tranny the same as Starfish. It's the one thing I have not been able to do since I acquired my car at 94k almost a year ago.

kinda had to do.You have to take the driver side wheel off, then the plastc panels. The cover is on the driverside.toward the front of car.You might not need to take it out,but def. do the oil change with the right oil.

How the hell is changing the fluid going to affect the throw out bearing?!

Starfish, what you are referring to is the oil slinger (or pump). And yes, they are known to make noise. If you read through this thread, you can find various reasons for the noise problem;

www.neons.org • View topic - It's not the TB or the slinger... the scrapping noise solved

From what you are saying OP, I would look in the direction of the TOB rattling because of some play in the set-up (you'll see drakito on that thread referencing it). In my experience, it a common cause of "the noise".

The nvt-350 requires a special fluid to ensure the long life of the paper back syncros. I STRONGLY recommend running nothing but the chrysler specific fluid in these trannies. With that being said i have had 3 vehicles with this tranny and all of them made a rattling noise noise. As long as the shifting is smooth then i say roll with it but have some money set aside to get a new trans installed.

I never said anything about the fluid relating to the throw out bearing. I see where one could be confused by what I said.

Basically what I was saying is that if the "noise" occured with the clutch pressed in then it's a good possibility it could be the bearing. In that case fluid wouldn't matter.
But since the noise is occuring with the clutch out then Fluid could help. I also went on to say it could be something small that vibrated/worked it's way out of place just enought to make some noise.

I have gathered a lot of info from seeing your posts Bullett and hope to pick your mind some later down the road when I get into more advaned tuning.

Every 420A 5sp trans I ever had Made that noise. And yes when I pushed the clutch in It also went away.I took the sliger out and the noise magically disapeared.I didnt think leaving it out would be a good idea so I put it back and delt with the noise for about another month, untill I drained the oil out and put in fresh atf-4 with alittle extra lucas.

pull the slinger out and see if the noise goes away.If it doesnt, put the slinger back in and start thinking about pulling your trans apart to do a autopsy.

Lol, ok, gotcha. Yeah, I definitely read it as changing the fluid would help the TO bearing.

Alright question mark and exclamation mark rescinded :p

HA HA
Thanks bud.

So I was cleaning the hell out of my engine bay the other day. And I really got in and scrubbed a little. Guess what I learned????? The 1st owner had transmission work done.. I know this because it says Eclipse 1998 on the transmission in marker.... So I'm going with it was probably from a salvage yard or something.... Now I'm curious as to what clutch was used and why a tran had to be swapped in....???? The original owner had left me some basic upgrades and all of them are name brand/ good quality.
Hoping maybe there is a decent aftermakert cluch??

And I'm assuming the OP not responding the last few days it worked????? :sneaky:

Yeah it worked all right! Thanks everyone for the advice! The transmission fluid that i had was to thick, and when i switched it to the Chrysler ATF+4 fluid, it worked right away! Thank you so much! DSM for life!

:hellyeah:
Love when you are crossing your fingers it isn't a major issue, and it works out with a simple cheap soultion.

Ok, so noise came back again! And i am very pissed off because last time my speed sensor did not work, the mechanic had to drop the transmission because a gear was missing, and while he took the transmission off, he said that the clutch bearing, which im guessing is the TOB, was all messed up. So he switched it, but now it seems like the car is making an annoying noise, and i feel like its the TOB again!

Does the noise go away when you push the clitch in? What about when you put light pressure on the pedal? Engine running of course.

Yes, when i push the clutch in the noise goes away. And when i put light pressure on the gas, it also goes away. And yes, the car is running. Earlier in this thread they told me to put ATF+4 Trans Fluid for my 5 speed 420A, and i did. But the noise is still there again

Then it would sound like a TOB. Open thedust boot on the shift fork and make sure the TOB is seated.
