Ok...I finally got my eclipse on the road, but had a really bad vibration and noise from under the car. Its a 1990 gsx with around 202000 on the body with a new motor/trans/tcase. The noise sounded like a clanging...metal on metal or something, and the vibration shook the car, but only on partial throttle and decel. We found the the bushings going around the driveshaft were shot, so I got another driveshaft today with 75k on it. After installing it, the vibration is gone, and so is SOME of the clanging. It still sounds the same, but doesn't happen quite as often. Its mainly heard when coming to a stop. I read the VFAQ on the driveshaft bushing and silicone, but that was for accel. There is no noise that I can hear on accel, just on decel. Do you think this is the same problem as described in the VFAQ and can be fixed the same way, or is there something else you might suggest. Thanks all!

*3ay 5n thshaft?!?!?!? like in te shaft it self? if you grab the front and rear of the centerline and there is play you have a severily work shaft with bad universal joints. remove it immediatly. if it fails while driving it can cause serious damage. my buddies alluminum shaft failed on a launch and flipped his car over. verry bad juju. otherwise it could be a diff problem. also, that is prbly an lsd rear end and the viscous couppling could be worn inside. you dont even want to know what that part costs fom te dealer. id ceck ## drivline and then if its worn that way replace it. also the e-brake inside the rear discs have been known to make that noise b4 when work. thre is a littledrum brake inside he brake disc itself.

Sorry, the play is not in the shaft, but where the bushings around the carrier beraings are. I am able to move the driveshaft anyway i would like to inside those bushings. The new bushings are firmer, and took away all the vibration problems, but only SOME of the noise. The noise hasn't changed, just doesn't come AS often. Its still frequent, just not as frequent. Also, since you mentioned the E-Brake, mine does not work at all. I can pull it tight inside the car but it doesn't effect the car in the slightest. Thanks!

Are there any other opinions of what this problem could be...I am going to try the silicone for the driveshaft, and see if that helps/fixes the problem. But the E-Brake peaked my interest also...If there is any more information on that that you could provide or anyone else could provide (such as a fix for the problem you mentioned) it would be greatly appreciated!

I had this kind of problem with my car. Strange noise coming from the rear diff i opened it up a few times and adjusting backlash but the noise never goes away. I finally found from where that lose clanging sound was coming. The splines on the output shaft of the trany and in the input shaft of te TC where so rusted and lose that i might feel like 1/8'' of free play in axial mouvement.

I just recently replaced my worn tranny and tcase with one with 40k....no rust or free play on the shaft at all...plus...I can hear it coming from the rear....driving and decel I put my head out the window, and had a friend do the same (I kept my eyes on the road...but DSMers have funny sounds and we have to do strange things to locate these sounds)....its def. coming from behind us...

I also remembered that I can get the noise to show up while I am pushing the car...Its been a while since I had to do that, but it pings/clangs...more of a ping it sounds like every roation/half rotation of the driveshaft. And when driving today, doing around 40 in 5th, I popped the clutch, and anytime I simply pop it out (no gas/no brake) I can get the noise to come around. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The noise seems to happen only when I am in gear. I no longer hear it when the car is rolling slowly. Its mainly heard on decel with the car in gear, if I press in the clutch it goes away as the driveshaft/whatever else can spin freely. I am going to try to fill the 2 rubber circles the draftshaft runs through with silicone as the VFAq says and see if the fixes the problem tomorrow. If there is any other advice or suggestions that anyone can offer, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

i think ive got the same problem. if im in any gear and i rod up to like 4-7k and then just let off the gas without clutchin or shifting gears this hideous grinding noise occurs. i however have a 2g so idk if i can still do the silicone mod. Im getting a new tranny this summer and if that doesnt fix the problem i might have to get a new rear end and what not. then driveshafts everything till its fixed i spose but if anyone pin points what it is. to me it just seems like there is slack somewhere in the drivetrain. i even ran my car up on a lift and couldnt make the noise so to me it seems like as soon as the wheels catch up to the engine it starts skipping some gears or something. idk any help would be awesome thanks guys

Mine isn't grinding at all, and its 100% not coming from the front of the car. Its a clanking like a solid metal hitting something else thats metal....it SOUNDS like the driveshaft when it clanks, but I just didn't know. I also found a problem with the rear calipers where the ebrake attatches to which is keeping my ebrake from working properly...I think this could be party of my problem, but I dont think its where the noise is COMING from, its just helping to cause friction, thus helping bring out the noise. Who knows though, with a DSM...its never obvious.

Well, I found out that it was not the driveshaft making noise...the noise is actually coming from the rear diff. I am able to rotate the driveshaft roughly 1/8in back and forth, it when it stops rotating (i.e. start moving the rear axles) is when the metal clang sounds...not sure what is causing this, but any help would be greatly appreciated!
