No power above 2k

Well i Am a owner of a 98 mitsubishi eclipse gs-t auto.

well so today was a hellish day for me, i woke up for school after a 2 hour delay because of temp. being - 2 degrees .... went to start my car with my auto starter from window.. didn't work.. so i was like okay w.e went out to the car 20 minutes later tried to turn it on.. well didnt start got it too after 4 tries then died then got it to go..

power antenna broke, two speakers died, now this..

THE PROBLEM: i was just leaving school and all u hear is pop.. i couldn't accelerate after 2k anymore it sounds like air coming out but not sure. ughh what could this be? im pretty sure its not my ecu though.. and people have told me it could be that. it still shifts fine so i doubt its the transmission..


but also because of this max speed is like 40 and i could barly make it up hill

The pop was probably an intercooler hose poping off. Now you're running on mostly gas, and not much air.

whats a coupler? and idn how sure are you guys its the inter cooler piping? so my car needs the air to go along with the gas to make more power above 2k+ rpms?

i looked at all the other threads about lose of power and most seem to be associated with intercooler piping but how can i test to see where its leaking from?

i also heard something about vacuum lines.. not sure though



any more thoughts?

Intercooler piping consists of the pipes, silicone couplers (aka couplers), and clamps (t-bolt, etc.).

Yes, if a coupler pops off, creating a huge boost leak, a large portion of the already metered air escapes the intake tract. The problem is the ECU will not know this air has been lost and will still send the same amount of fuel, bogging down the engine and leaving you with no power.

Do a little research on boost leaks, boost leak testers, etc. and you will find a lot of good info.

Lastly, another possible cause of your poor performance is you had some electrical disaster that burnt a trace in your ECU, putting the engine in limp mode (i.e. horrible performance). However, this is unlikely and your performance would be even worse than what you stated. I would pursue possible boost leaks as that is a VERY common problem.

It sounds like a big boost leak. Check all you intercooler hoses and see if there are any that popped out and re-tighten it.

but yah idn i havent checked yet because of it raining but ill check my hoses on x mas or the day after and ill repost =)

Same thing happened to me on the highway and scared the crap out of me as many bad things raced through my mind. The worm clamp came loose on the sidemount and every thime i got to 4-6 psi it'd loose it's seal and make a horrible wooshing sound. Easy fix tho.

well i checked and one of my hoses is loose i put it up but hit around 10psi and it shot off again... it was working though was only going to 2k before now up to 5k... u think its just hte clamp? i cant go by any because of how its christmas but i will tomorrow

any ideaS?

It has to be the clamp bro. Change it.

Has happen to my before with old j pipe upgraded all couplers to vibrant and t bolt clamps never had the problem again check intercooler piping or anywere else for boost leaks.\

Shoudnt be a big problem man

hey guys again i put the upper intercooler piping on fitting perfectly got it to about red lining and pop...

never changed the clamps..


before i go oiut and buy them any other things u think i might need for tomorrow??
u think the clamps are just weak"?

go with the T-clamps it wont happen again.

you can get them here.. there 6 bucks a piece but well worth the money. the 2' should be fine.

It was a major boost leak
flipped the piping around and put knotches in the metal for a better grip for the hosing and it stays in perfectly now =)

The stock worm clamp was probably just worn out...
