Toronto,
I was wiring my whole car last week. When it was time to do the knock sensor, the ground wire off the sensor ripped off, leaving only 1 wire hanging.

Can I still run the car with 1 wire (without ground) or Do I have to get a new knock sensor?

you could still run the car without the knock sensor but if you start to get any detonation you aren't goind to know about it. Also you should end up with a check engine light since the ECM wont be able to detect the knock sensor. The best idea would be to get the wiring fixed even if you re-wire the ground yourself.

I am reviving this post to add in some information incase someone else searches and finds this thread.

If you end up with a Check Engine Light (Knock Sensor Code) then while you accelerate the ECU will show 9 counts of knock every few seconds to make sure your timing is continually pulled. This is a safety feature that has been programmed in to make sure you don’t detonate. Your car will be much slower do to this.

If anyone has anything to add please do so. I have seen a lot of questions about the Knock sensor CEL and I wanted to help clear it up.

Thats basically a ( Safe Mode ) with it unplugged so it doesn't blow up right?

For every count of knock over a certain point the ecu takes away a number amount of timing. I don't remember the number but I am sure some one can chime in and give it to us.

So if you are running your car hard and you go over 9 counts of knock then the ecu does not know and does not pull the right amount of timing, creating more detonation, a lean condition and inevitably a blown engine.

I purchased a new knock sensor from ongreenperformance.com at there Ebay store and received it in two days. If your car has over 60,000 miles then go ahead and stick a new one in. Also if you have not had the caps changed in your ECU you need to have that taken care of. There is a member who's name is Steve that is an expert at rebuilding our ECU's. Search for him and ask him about it. Here is his website http://simon.chi.il.us/ECU/

A lot of problems can come from the ECU Caps leaking and you can not always tell if they are leaking by looking at them. Every 1st Gen ECU leaks it's just a matter of when, but if you get the new higher heat rated caps then you will not have to worry about it anymore. A lot of problems with Knock are from ether a bad ECU or a bad Knock Sensor especially on a stock car.

I believe new caps and a new knock sensor should be anyone's first two upgrades.

I think it's 1-3 it continues to advance, 3-7, it stops advancing, and 7 or more it starts retarding timing by a degree. I could be wrong, I just pulled that off the top of my head.
How's the knock sensor from ongreenperformance? How longs it lasted?
I need a new one, but will probably go to crapy auto-zone just for the convient warranty claims. I believe theres was 65.

It came in an OEM Mitsubishi genuine parts box but if I knew that AutoZone carried it I would have got it local.
How long has it lasted? About 50 miles, its a drag car that only gets driven back and forth to the track. Since it is oem it should be fine.

i believe it pulls 1 degree of timing for every 3 counts after 7.
