Ask Me, Virginia
I was on it hard in 3rd gear and suddenly there was no power afterwords. The car struggled to get up a hill in 5th. On the throttle boost is reading just below 0 on my boost gauge. No violent sounds when this happened and the motor is otherwise smooth. No smoke when driving normal etc.

At idle, vacuum is good at about 21in hg.

Compression on the car has always been about 178 in each cylinder but it has always burnt oil rather quickly. I have only run it a few thousand miles with Mobil 1 15w-50 and checked the dipstick which was bone dry. Wish I could say how many quarts I added but I wasn't paying attention.

I am wondering if I starved the turbo of oil today possibly? (If such a thing exists)

The turbo is a Big 16g. The wastegate is a Tial External 40mm with a pretty new spring and has always proven reliable. The BOV is dodge modded.

Observations:

1) I have one of the one way valves coming off of the PCV valve to reduce boost leaks in that area. I noticed that the line connecting from it to the intake manifold is split which is dropping oil on the intake manifold (I guess this is a boost leak if I think about it).

2) I noticed that the turbo outlet pipe is a little loose. It is really hard to get to on the GVR-4 because the upper intercooler pipe blocks it. I figure that a loose pipe would only reduce boost at most.

3) I have been chasing a boost fade gremlin ever since I bought the car. I am wondering if the turbo has bit the bullet? I always blew out a rather large amount of smoke when on it since I bought the car but was never sure if that came down to tuning etc.

Thoughts?

Thanks

The turbo can DEFINITELY be starved of oil and ruin the seal/bearings, similar to an engine. That combined with a boost leak and it's like trying to drink your long island iced tea through a straw with moderately sized holes in it, you possibly either overworked the turbo to death or starved it. Check for boost leaks before proceeding, pull off the intake pipe and check shaft play in and out

Ok, thanks guys. This sounds like it should be relatively straight forward then. I am pretty good at BLT but never got really serious about checking for shaft play because initially I didn't notice much play when it ran ok so I just left pursuing that silence alone.

So tell me something. Will a shaft play check definitively tell me whether or not I munched my turbo or is there a possibility that I will ultimately have to drop the turbo just to find out whether or not it is truly bad?

It seems to me that checking shaft play might be the thing to do first since I am right there before even pulling out my compressor and BLT jig.

Thanks
