Hey yall i just recently purchased a 93 GSX with 5 speed and 113k miles here in south western oregon. i finally got it up and running with new starter and alternator.
a couple questions i have before its worthy enough to be on the road without blowing up.... i have on the dash a constant intercooler light, which i would beleive to be the old weathered and cracked intercooler tubing. I also have a constant BRAKE light on switch. this car does have ABS so i am thinkin that could be a possibility? My last question deals with cooling system. I noticed that my factory fans will not turn on... even when the motor is HOT. my temp gauge does not work either but the thermostate does work. so i think by replacing the temp sensor and splicing in a new plug i (this one looks bad as it is) it should fix my non functional temp gauge and allow the fans to come on while hot?

a quick overview on the questions in case they are lost in my mumbo jumbo here.
constant Intercooler light on? possible causes
Constant Brake light on? possible causes
new temp sensor and plug in. will it fix my temp gauge and fan...

I just remember a couple other small questions. does anyone know how to test the wires or the temp sensor for function? also if anyone has any idea's on why my tachometer doesnt work i would appreciate it :D
thanks all in adance. btw this is my first non ford product so im a noobie in this turbo 4 cyl dsm world.

Sincerely, Eric

First off, there is no "intercooler light." That's the light for your coolant system. If you have a bad thermostat and temp sensor, the coolant won't flow and the fans won't know to turn on.

I'd highly suggest you don't drive the car until you figure it out. You run the risk of warping the head if you run too long without any coolant.

ah the orange light is the cooling system? thats good to know... im tryin to get a replacement temp sensor.... i did how ever get a new pigtail for the connector because mine had exposed wire and showed signs of repair. the thermostat is workin which is nice with this engine because i can see it where i pour the radiator coolant into the system.

I did think of added a water temp gauge (as i have one with sensor) and use that to monitor coolant temp... and then wire in a toggle switch to operate the fans. i just need to figure out the wiring lay out... i cannot find my repair book for my dsm LOL.
thanks for the info

well i did grab the wire color codes to see if someone can help me find out what sensor is what.
above the thermostat there is a sensor with a socket fitting. 2 wires each are green with yellow stripe and black with green stripe

below the thermostat there is another 2 wire socketed sensor the colors are yellow with green stripe and green with black stripe
lastly right next to that sensor is a smaller 1 wire sensor with a blade on it... the wire is yellow with green stripe which i found the wire broken off, but i just fixed it by adding a blade connector to the end of it.

can anyone tell me what these sensors are?

i really appreciate this all

ah the orange light is the cooling system?
Yeah. Get to eBay and get an Owner's Manual.

Don't put a toggle switch on the fan. Once you fix the water temp sensor, the ECU will know to turn the fans on by itself.

alright.. defiant that was funny picture. i got a new temp 2 blade temp sensor which is for the ECU that goes on just below the thermostat... then right next to it i replaced the 1 wire blade sensor which im told is the gauge sensor.

My gauge works now and i just had it running and bleed the air out of the cooling system... the temperature gauge went almost too hot and fans did not come on :-| that is still my concern... i am thinkin possibly a relay? anyone have an idea how to test that? without blowing something up :D

i really do appreciate the help and if anyone also has any insight as to what to look for the cause being of a non working tach please let me know.
Eric

alright i pushed the car a little warmer.. while i took voltage readings at the fuse block, and at teh two fan connections and this is what i got with ignition on car off

fuse block(fan relay) view as standing from passenger wheel....
top left 12.28 volt
top right 11.98 volt
bottom right 11.97 volt
bottom left 0.01 volt

passenger fan connection key on ignition off
green wire with black stripe 12.08 volts
all other wires 0 volts

Drivers side fan connection key on ignition off
blue wire with black stripe .01 volts
all other wires 0 volts

Key on Engine on
Fuse block fan relay view as standing from passenger wheel
top left 13.9 volts
top right 13.5 volts
bottom right 13.39 volts
bottom left .01 volts

Passenger fan
green wire with black striped 13.5 volts
all other wires .02 volts

drivers fan
blue wire/black stripe .01 volt
all other wires .02 volts

while engine was running the drivers side fan was unpluged while reading the passenger fan connection voltage. then after reading drivers side fan voltage and pluging the connector back in.... the passenger fan came on for 30sec to 1 min when it shut off the drivers side fan came on and shut off near instantly and both fans spun down to a stop together.... when looking at the temp gauge the needle was at the line just before orange when fans came on.

does all this sound like the way it should work? I would have figured the fans to be on alot longer than this.... just for your informationt he outside air temp is 85 degree's

im wanting to make sure its safe to drive LOL.

alright the fans come on factory at about 200 degrees. at VFAQ Site - Visual Frequently Answered Questions i found a way to use a toggle switch to control when the fans are on. without splicing
any wiring. i took the ac fan relay and put two wires in port 1 and 3 iirc from the website and hooked those to a toggle switch... both fans come on with ignition on. :D so all is good in the cooling department.
thanks yall

Coolant light = Check your coolant reservoir
Brake light = Handbrake switch or brake fluid reservoir

On a side note, the ECU doesn't control the radiator fan on 1g's. There's a temp switch on the lower end tank of the radiator, right below the cooling fan, there might be some problems there. Also check the rad. fan relay and fuse.
