Edmonton,
Hi,

This is my first post. :) My 97 GST was pumping out VOLUMES of white smoke, so I thought I'd check the turbo.

Uh oh, not good. Oil, and tons of shaft play. :( (Front/back and a bit side to side).

So, I figured, I'd strip down and slap in a new turbo. Easy right? (Maybe, this is my first time soooo...). I still need a turbo, I'd like a T25 or a T28 (easy install), or, any suggestions?

I will post the steps I've done so far, and more pics. But, is there any caveats or anything I should do along the way?

Also, my valve cover leaks oil. Anyone else have this problem?

I will post a mod list soon. (Basically Stage 1, no fuel mods yet).

How many miles do you have on the engine/HG?

If you spend money on a T25 you will kick yourself in the ass. Upgrade if you are ready. Just run lower boost till you get fuel mods done.

I think everyone with a DSM has or will have that same valve cover leak. You'll just have to replace the gasket. Don't forget the sparkplug hole gaskets and the half-moon gasket too. When I got my gasket set from advance, it came with all the right gaskets. Theres a ton of info on replacing the gasket if you do a search too (such as torque specs and how much RTV to use) :thumb:

T25 is $100
T28 is $600

16G =? I'm thinking around 600 + the 200 kit.

I just wanna get my car back on the road :) (I'm poor etc)

List of what I did:

1) Remove Maf Wire
2) Remove Tid/Air filter + associated hoses/tubes
3) Drain Oil (16mm bolt)
4) Removed Upper Rad hose
5) Drained Rad fluid (Small plug under drivers side fan)

6) Removed heat sheild (upper)
7) Removed lower heat shield, and things GOT FUN here :) Cut my pinkie, dropped a bolt in the oil pan (see 3 above).
And had fun trying to get the O2 sensor out of the way. Whee. Best step right here
8) Disconnected the neg. on the battery *Yeah I know, should've done that before, but when I started messing with wires, I took it off*

Fun stuff tomorrow :)

I can find you a 14b for $100-$150 and the install kit can be parted together for around $100. So for around $200-$250 you can have a better turbo than the stock on. The 14b is no slouch.

Have fun. I know I was cursing up a storm when I did mine.

i just replaced my turbo a few months ago. I went with a t-25 becuase i just wanted to get it running enough to sell. word of caution... at the end of it all, dont forget to hook up the vacuum line from the BCS. it's under the intake and really easy to miss, especially when you're rushing around becuase you know youre almost done. Trust me, its easy to forget like i did. Ran like crap till i found the hose and found out where it went.

Ok, got my car running again! :)

It's got a good T25, but as soon as I installed it (runs great again, whee!), I had an offer to get a 14b (dou! one day late!!).

But since it was so easy, I think I will upgrade to 14B anyways. Anyone do this? What will I need?

Basically I know it bolts on, but the oil/coolant lines are different? And also the 'J' pipe is needed off a 1G to fit the LICP right?

Sorry for the newb questions, but I did a search on '14b 2g' and I gave up after 3 pages :)

I also read the $40 way to install the 14b, just making sure.

Also, THANK YOU! To all the good advice :)
