ok basically i just got this car. its a 92 eclipse gst.. off some guy on ebay last saturday evening. i got a loan for it and everything. dude said on ebay auction that has new 4 puc clutch, new long block with less than 300 miles on it, rebuilt head, newer stock turbo and a few other things like exhaust etc... anyways to get to my point i was on the eway a few days ago shifted into 3rd getting on the eway, cars werent lettin me on so i down shifted to 2nd, all of the sudden the car started jittering and sputtering bad. pulled it over to side started it back up, and it idles at a steady 500rpms RUFF! tried to go a little bit, the clutch pedal goes straight to the floor. so i pulled it back up with my hand started it back up test clutch at idle, there pressure and all so i tried to shift into 1st, bairly went i mean bairly, even if i shifted into 2nd etc it goes as fast as 1st well a lil slower. so i took it to midas closest place (had it towed) and heres what they told me:

midas called. they sighed.. and said, well we think the 2 and 3 cylinder isnt fireing. could be coil pack, could be spark plugs, could be wires.... he said the clutch needs to be bled .. well i dont think thats the only prob with the clutch... so i said how much.. he said i really dont wana work on it ... estimate is $2,000 basic minimum we're lookin at here. i about cried... literally...

theres a vaccume hose or some hose missing from BOV tosome hose on left side of motor.... here's what one of my friends said:

"Dude, just get those lines fixed that I told you about and replace the TB or TB elbow gasket and guarantee that will allow help things out immensely. Also, what did they mean by two cylidners not firing? Did they see if no spark was actually being producing through the wires or what? 2 grand for a simple tune up is a ####ign rip."

he also said .. "if it is just your wires, I recomend spending around 500-600 bucks for a buschur racing coil pack converstion that reliminates the need of constantly replacing wires."

im sorry this is so long, but i paid $3,000 for this car and this shit happens . i hope someone can tell me or diagnose whats wrong with my car. its my only means gettin back and forth to work.

plz help.

Hey man, if two of your four cylinders are not working and Midas says that it could be your plugs, wires, and coils, just replace them yourself. The plugs and wires will cost you roughly about $100 to get and the coil will be about $150 to replace. What I would do about the clutch is get a new one and put it in. Your friend's right about $2000 for just a tune-up. DSMers do most of the works themselves. Good luck..

Get as far away from Midas as you possibly can, they are not qualified to change the brake pads on a DSM let alone affect any serious repairs.

You and a friend can bleed your clutch very easily that may help with the problem, also check your slave and master cylinders while you are at it. Reconnect any hoses that are not attached to the BOV, the small hose from the nipple on the BOV goes to the wastegate actuator, the larger hose goes to the dump tube on your intake. That should solve your idle and sputtering problems. As far as Midas "thinking" cylinders are not firing... Either they are or they are not. Do a spark test on each individual cylinder and you will have the answer. Also do a leakdown test to verify that you have no other vacuum leaks other than the BOV. Do the simple stuff first and then progress from there. Report your results here and we can help you troubleshoot any subsequent problems. I must reiterate, get away from Midas, they are not qualified to work on your car, they WILL fu(k something up and they WILL overcharge you for doing it.

thanks for replying ppl... i took it to a shop thats very trusted.. heres the low down:

cars up at kisor performance.... its gona cost me $817 to get it fixed. it was a head gasket... compression check on all valves, #2 and #3 had no compression. the diagnose was head gasket is blown. plus the intake, exhaust and valve cover gasket are all being replaced. oil change and antifreeze of course.... he's also going to replace and reassemble head to re route correct vaccume diagram. so thats the story.....

does anyone kno if i have legal change to take the seller to small claims court? the auction on ebay said NOTHING about the gasket or how much it will cost to fix. please let me know.

Was the car running fine or was the problem as soon as you started it? If it was running fine then it happened, I dont think the seller would be responsible for it? If it was like that, Maybe something like 'False advertisement' ?

Rob.

car idled funny as hell.. he said to me once i got it , "ooh, when they put the new motor in, they eliminated as much vaccume hoses as they could without hurting anything." it happened within 4-5 days, i only drove it 2 days and only 20 miles total. i dont understand how this would happen.

Lemon Laws usually only apply to NEW CARS. When you buy a used car you are buying the car "AS IS" that means there is no implied warranty's, and lemon laws do not apply.

If you take the issue to small claims the guy just has to say "It was fine when I had it" or
I didn't know, it worked for me." If a head gasket was blown, I don't see how you could have drivin it...but maybe?

As for your issue, if the car ran when you bought it, if you where able to drive it and didn't bring up those issues when you purchased then its your repair. If you asked the guy hey why does the clutch go to the floor, why is there no power and such and he lied to you saying this or that then you might have a single thread, but only if you have a witness, or your back to his word vs yours.

WHEN YOU BUY A CAR, TAKE SOMEONE WITH YOU!!!! Take a person that knows the car you are buying. Don't take a Midas Tech to a DSM car that you are buying and expect them to know the ins and outs.

As for bleeding the clutch, we just did this weekend on a buddies new ACT clutch. BE VERY CAREFULL bleeding the clutch and that you watch the fluid level in the resevoir. If you run that low or out, you are goign to put air in the system. Take your time. One person under the car, one person pump the clutch. Its just like doing your brakes...almost...

I hate to say its a learning experience, but welcome to the DSM community, this won't be the first time you swear at your car....or the person that sold it to you....LOL

Good luck and keep us posted
