I know the transmission in my car which is a 91 tsi comes apart in 3 pieces. Is it possible to get just a bellhousing or do you think ineed a new tranny. Well i think i know what happened to my car....wont know for sure till i take it apart but...... Well I am almost positive the person that works at a local shop in indiana (not SBR) that put my clutch in my car didnt lock tite the bolts that hold the pressure plate to the flywheel and it backed off and while it was spinning, split my bellhousing. But to the og question, can i just buy a bell housing and if so anyone have one :D?

You'll be better off buying a good used trans unless you know how to do a rebuild yourself since that's what you'll need to do to get the bellhousing off. You have to take out the top cases and the gearsets and then swap all that to a new bellhousing. At that point your clearances may be a little off so you may need different shims. I'd rather just find a good used tranny for like $250 and throw it in.

Ah, i didnt know that. I thought you could just unbolt the bellhousing from the rest of the gear case with out taking anything else apart. Well now its time to find a tranny. The only one i can find locally the moron doesnt know if it works (got it with a car that doesnt run) and he wants 450 for it minus the xfer case. I told him LOLwtfgtfo. Now, im not saying im going to actually do this, but what would it take to throw in a fwd tranny for the time being until i get things straightened out with the financial situation?

Got a question.....I was lookin on the classifieds for a tranny and i found a selectable tranny and xfer case for like 500 bucks. Do i have to modify anything or change the shift linkage to make it work in my 91? Secondly, i know you can switch it to fwd/awd but what does that require you to do to make that happen? :talon: :thumb:

I'd do some searching on here. I know it has been posted, but, can't remember what it said. Here is a link, however, from the www.vfaq.com specifically about it. I haven't read it in a while, so, I'm not sure if it will answer all of your questions though.

As far as using an FWD tranny, you would also need a FWD flywheel. I don't think anything else, aside from pulling the drive shaft out, but, that should be a given. I personally would find a good used AWD tranny and use it instead of doing 2 tranny swaps.
