Winnipeg,
Hey all, just want to say hello, from Winnipeg, Manitoba and this is my first post after going over the hundreds of "Manuals are so much better" posts, etc.

I currently own a 96 Tsi AWD AUTOMATIC, that has been fully built with parts from IPT (www.importperformancetrans.com), including their Electro-Matic Manual Controller, which allows push-button shifting and lock up clutch with a toggle switch. I also have their reworked valve body with a Translab shift kit, among other things. I thoroughly enjoy walking all over 5 speed GSX's and GST's, which this car occasionally does. All i can say is, I Love My Auto!!

Peace
:talon:

congratulations... from most of the threads I have read there aren't many "auto-haters" just people who prefer one over the other.

From what I have been seeing lately Auto's are quickly being recognized as a good thing. I've even seen a MT to AT swap in a DSM.

Also there are a couple out there running low 10's at 130ish mph.

A friend of mine hopes to swap out his auto for a 5 speed in his AWD this winter, i tried to convince him not to but it has high mileage, so it might be for the best. No one around here has ever done it, and its probably going to take both of us quite a while

I am not too suprised to find DSM owners are liking automatic transmissions.
From what I have been able to learn reading about the pro's and con's of each, with a turbo charged car your going to notice more benefit from a automatic.
The reason for this is due to the fact that a automatic transmission can shift much faster than a person with a manual transmission can (no matter how good at shifting you are).
So overall a automatic should gain a bit in the performance side of things, given it does have a bit of drivetrain loss over a stick, but when your talking a turbo charged engine that can put out 400+ WHP its not all that significant of a loss.

Funny I hated my auto after owning nothing but auto's. I had a build auto trans in my car as well and I didn't like it at all. I swapped to an MT over the winter and would never go back again. Each his own I guess but I love the 5 speed.

That doesn't really much compare with a stock DSM automatic though, does it.
Not many are able to put that kind of investment into a transmission.
Delighted you could, and are happy with it. But the comparison is chalk and cheese.

True, but im just making the point of how you can feel the power and joy of driving the same thru an auto then you can a 5 speed, with the right stuff. Dont get me wrong, i love 5 speeds, and considered the swap myself at one point.

wait till some guy throws in a ripper shift transmission, its designed to shift without the clutch with basically no damage, my dad had one in his 69 yenko nova...hello torque machine :D

Auto's can be great for the dragstrip, when fully built, as they shift quickly, can be power braked, and such. With stutterboxes & NLTS though, the advantage is lessened quite a bit, and I'd LOVE to see someone say they liked an automatic, turbocharged car better on an AutoX or road course. :D

Both have their place, for what I like to do, I would never buy/build an auto.

They weren't tubo'd, but Jim Hall's Chaparrals had a fair bit of luck with automatics.

Ugh, those cars got more than their fair share of whacks with the ugly stick. :barf:

That being said, using the big fans underneath to help pull the car down to the road was really radical for it's time. Good enough to get those things outlawed.

Well, not many things are good-looking when there's a Lola parked next to it. :D

50-horspower Jacobs industrial engine pushing out enough air to move the car a 45 miles an hour without the car's engine running. Jackie Stewart said it was uncanny- it no longer mattered what line you took through a turn, it just tracked. I think the most bizarre outgrowth of the whole concept was Alfa-Romeo's F1 car that had a similar vacuum setup with the fan run off a camshaft. But the fun ended when they did away with moveable aerodynamic devices.

I would like to know more about this trans controller.... Im not about to spend 550 buks just so i can shift with a button... Supposdely it shifts faster, and supposedly it BANGS gears.

Banging gears equals breaking stuff. I have had this tranny for over a year and I race my car all the time, i launch full boost at 22psi 5000 rmps and my tranny has never given me one problem. Is there more to this controller than quicker shifts and shifting with a push button? Supposedly u can gain massive top end with this controller... how?
