What's up everyone? My name is Mike, and i'm from FL. New here and to dsm's. Kinda clueless as to what I should do with my project. I bought a really clean 1gb shell a few months ago and have been slowly stripping/painting the interior. Also picked up some mint evo8 recaro's for $400. I have a donor motor from a friend but not sure what to do as for a rebuild and turbo setup, as well as a transmission to hold power. I'm coming from the honda game and I heard these cars are a completely different story. I'd like to have the car going by the end of april. Here's some pics. Let me know what ya think! Any and all input is welcome and appreciated! Thanks!

Wow Mike you have a project on your hands. Welcome to the DSM world, and FL. I am north of you in Jacksonville.
I guess to work on your questions you really need to evaluate the purpose of the car. Is it going to be a DD, a street monster, a little of both, a drag machine, are you going for a level of show?

I think in the state the car is right now you are setup perfectly to do a wire tuck and relocate the fuse box, move the battery to the trunk. These are going to be very inexpensive for money wise right now because everything is out of the car, but time costly as you will have to put in some man hours. There is a couple of walk troughs in the tech archives on this forum that can walk you through.

Power plant, your car came with a 4G63 6 bolt and that is exactly what I would put back in. How far you build up your engine is up to you. There are some guys that are putting out insane times at the track with stock motors....
If you go with a stroker then you can get more bottom end to get you into the bigger turbos.
Picking a turbo is like picking a flavor of ice cream, find the flavor that suits you. The 16G's are good street turbo's and great for DD, but top out in the mid 350hp ish. Look into the HX35, GT35 turbo if your wanting bigger numbers. There is a TON of turbos that work on your car.

I was DSM, then went to Honda's and came back to DSM and no they are nothing alike. The biggest difference is our cars came stock turbocharged that means we done run the 5-7 psi you get to run on the stock Honda engines. You don't have to swap in a LS, or funky Acura engine in to make power. Just the stock 6bolt and 14b turbo your car came with can be made into a monster.

Last note, going manual or auto. I love driving a manual, it's a lot of fun, but my auto is a 1000 times better than any manual. That is just my opinion and I don't want to start some sort of argument about it. Autos shift faster, build boost off the line, and are more consistent and a hella of a lot easier to drive in traffic :). I also think they are more reliable, and less prone to breakage. Hope this helps in some ways for you, good luck!

Well, well with a project like you got there, get ready to learn. That's nice to see someone bring one back to life, good to hear. You are going to fall in love just so you know, when its all said and done. My biggest advise is take your time, do things right. Do your homework and research. Post questions here, obviously someone will point out where to go find the information for any questions you have. This site and forum contains everything you could possibly want to know "free" of charge. You my friend, just have to do your research and learn as much as you can. Some systems are complex and some are simple. Importantly no one is going to tell you everything, it is up to you to know where to find the information. Hope your ready by then. I have some maintenance coming up that needs to be done (T-belt and H2o pump) so, I have until Spring so I'm in no rush. I'm scouring the net for now price comparing; and found the internet is cheaper than going to a parts store in terms of parts quality and availability. I'm a big NAPA fan but I can get OEM parts for less than I go to them so, that takes time to track parts down. I'm about an hour North of Jax so at least you have some support close by. Good Luck! Boost is addictive.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone! And small world being in cape LOL, feel free to stop by sometime. As for the car, it is a tsi awd with lsd 4 bolt rear. My donor motor is a 6bolt 4g63 that is said to have a forged bottom end, but I don't believe it. My goals are an oem forged rebuild, and to break 400whp. I Want it for the street/strip. The car is manual and I was looking at getting a transmission built. Not sure if I should stay with an internally gated turbo setup or go external wg. Any more suggestions are welcome. Thanks again everyone!

-Mike

internals are nice but you have more control and less boost creep with an external for the most part..

Is there any decently priced manifolds that have a wastegate flange? And aren't ebay? Also do you guys think it's possible to have it driving by the end of april? Thanks

-Mike

Depends on if you are just trying to throw it together to get it running. What turbo are you thinking for external wastegate? There are a couple of cast style (like the stocker) that have the wastegate option. I have seen them on the classified listings.
Do you have a wire harness? ECU? transmission? With only having the shell not sure how complete ABS, power steering, A/C, and if the car was a manual and keeping it manual or swapping. If your trying to get that done in a two months I hope you are ready for some man hours...

Have a fresh rebuilt turbonetics .60 trim. And the car has everything besides a/c components, but that doesn't bother me. Not going to be my dd. Pretty much drop in the motor and tranny/t-case and go. And do you mind showing me one of these manifolds? Thanks

-Mike

In Modding when I see a picture such as that only one term comes in mind, "funky monkey".

But, sure there is a correct name attached. That's a good location there where that 02 sensor mounts is where your egt sensor should go. Allot of people use that and put it in the middle of the manifold. I believe if you place it closest to #4 exhaust port you will know there are problems sooner if you can notice the rise in temperature and shut the car off. #4 cyclinder is the last in line and will starve for fuel first and run hotter than #1 will, so as theory goes you put it as far away as you can to get the most accurate reading of what the temperature is doing. Old trick I learned back in aviation maintenance school one day about Garrett turbo chargers, they think way too much about things like that but it makes since when your off the ground. So good gauges and correct location are useful to know and do correctly have installed when you can. Each person has their own ideas so feel free to choose your ideas. If that looks likes your setup, re post that pic with a new post. Someone will know beyond a doubt know and respond then again maybe your post will be viewed 86 times with 0 replies, or is it just happens with me at times:thumb:?

That manifold doesn't look too promising. Leaning towards the forced performance mani. Being a honda boy, i'm new to the whole internal gate world. What is a decent sized/priced turbo capable of 400+ hp? Again, thanks guys for all the help. It is much appreciated.

-Mike

I don't see why that one you got would have no problem doing the job, I guess you could put it up for trade plus some cash since you can see how hard parts can be to configure..That turbo you have I looked and it's at least $1,000 "new", so with your car purchase you walked away with at :thumb:least a grand in your pockets to play around with..

Something such as a 20g would work for 400hp, but if you really want to get there quick and easy I would get a Holset hx30 or hx35. Around here the Dodge guys let them go for pretty cheap because they haven't caught on to what we do with them :D.

You don't have to get the manifold with a wastegate flange, you can get an O2 housing with an external gate and just port the heck out of the wastegate channel and remove the internal gate completely. However, if your going with a turbo that is meant to be externally gated, this isn't an option. You could also use an internal gate so long as the channel and flapper are ported. Boost creep isn't as common on turbos such as genuine 20g's since they have a larger turbine housing (10cm^2 I think).

What fuel upgrades do you plan to go with? Do you have a tuning system in mind as well?

Heard a lot about those cummins turbo's being used. Might have to look into that. As far as fuel system/tuning, I already put a wally 255 in the tank. I was planning to just get some bigger inectors, and a fpr if necessary. And I was told to look into "dsm link" for tuning. Not to sure what that is but i'm guessing it's almost like a hondata for dsm's LOL. Thanks again everyone!

-Mike

If you have thee 255 in already you will need some sort of FPR. I just swapped my 190 for a 255 yesterday hoping I would be able to get away with it and my wideband was pegged at 10 under boost and 12's under idle and vac, they are supposed to be like 14.7, and she ran like a turd. I pulled the 255 out and 190 back in and back to good until I can pick up a FPR.

Yes Link is "like" Hondata, but it works as a logger and tuner. It's like a program that allows you to set all your variables. Us newer 2Gs can get away with ECUFlash as our ECU's are flashable.
I would put a wideband on the top of your list, AEM uego is good the Innovative is better. It's imparitive to know what your actual air/fuel is doing or you risk running lean.
There are a lot of DSM'ers running the Holsets, pretty sure you can put one together with a BEP housing for under $600, and easily hit 400, probably closure to 500, but they are going to require a little more for supporting mods.
If your shooting for a solid 400hp pick up a wideband ($200), link with chipped ECU, FPR, and go turbo shopping, shoot for 800cc or bigger injectors.

Yes you will need an AFPR. The stock regulator gets over run very easily. ECMLink (also called DSMLink) is a great way to tune. In a nut shell, it lets you hack into the ECU to change internal values and datalog at the same time. It will also let you run speed density, GM MAF's, Evo 8 MAF's, and all that good stuff. However, lucky for you, 1g's can run a device called Ostrich with an emulator known as Jackal. Many claim that it's better than ECMLink so long as you have more than average skills with computers. It's also much cheaper to set up. So you might want to look into that as well.

But like 69_luv said, you will need a wideband, larger injectors, a bigger turbo, and some kind of tuning program. Which one of each is up to you. Once you have all those your basically on your way to 400hp! :thumb:

Another helping hand right here! Im not too far from STARS! hes in waycross georgia, im at fort stewart/georgia. not too far from jacksonville! im not sure how far from jacksonville you are but i love going south, especially to help another dsmer! seems like you got a good plan! All you need is time, money for parts and let us DSMERS help you out! One big family nation wide!

<3 FL cars.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction everyone! I really appreciate it. As much as I want to dump every dime I make into this car, i'm moving to orlando to go to uti in july. I kinda need money for school so the build is most likely going to be postponed =[ and possibly for sale. The honda bug is still biting and I have much more knowledge of them. Also, as much as I don't want to give up so easily after all i've done, I think I can more efficiently build a honda LOL. Any input? Thanks guys..
