I got this 1990 gsx and I dont know much about dsms I took some pictures there are some mods i am no sure if the turbo is stock so I took some pictures and was hoping you could tell me what mods have been made. It also has precision fuel injectors that say 1780 wha is that?

The turbo does not appear to be stock, but I can't tell you what it is. You have upgraded hard intercooler piping, a front mount intercooler, and aftermarket (looks like FP) exhaust manifold, and aftermarket fuel pressure regulator, an aftermakret BOV, a non-stock intake pipe (which looks like it wants to be replaced very soon), an external wastegate (can't tell you what it is either), and a strut tower bar. That's just what I see that's not stock. :)
 
How much did you pay for it? It needs a bit of TLC but it came with AEM EMS, which is one of the best, if not the best, standalone tuning system out there. I live really close to you, let me know if you need help with anything or if you go to any local meets, ect. Just send me a message and I'll give you a hand.
 
I paid 3gs for tha car, and it deff needs alot of tlc, Its been running crappy lately, the aem CPU needs to be tuned badly, and it wont hold boost when I step on the gas the engine just revs after 4rpm n blows off then a cloud. Of black smoke comes out the tail pipe. Car won't launch it's not putting out the power I kno it has. What do u think?

Might be a boost leak or ignition problem, check for boost leaks first. I'll let you know as soon as I have some time off so we can meet up and I can help you out.
 
I wouldnt try launching it or beating on it until you figure out all the little problems. Check the basics like boost leaks, spark plugs, etc. and once thats all good, then have it re-tuned.
 
yea i have an aftermarket boost gauge, when i got the car the kid told me after he put in tha AEM EMS he never tuned it, but i wasnt sure if that could affect how the turbo works, i will be doing a boost leak this weekend and after i save up the money i am gonna bring it to a place to have it tuned, they charge 185/hr to tune it so unfortunately the tuning will have to wait, seeing is how I am scared if I go into it and try it my self I will seriously screw up the car, this is my first stand alone system so its all new to me, i always worked in dealerships and dont have that much knowledge on high performance but I am really instrested in learning thats why I am on this site tring to soak up as much info from u guys as possible so I really appreciate all the help.
 
No offense, you cant even tell if the car has a stock turbo or not. So tuning is the last thing you should be attempting.

I suggest this website becomes your new homepage and you start to read. Search function will be your best friend, and check the box to search "TITLES".

Everyone has mentioned what is what on here. There is also a MBC.

I personally would never buy a car modded, and have no clue whats in it. Maybe you can contact the seller and ask him to make a list so you no exactly what you have.

Turbo could be a 20g. As far as not holding boost, the turbo could be blown. Take the pipe off and check the shaft for any play. Also could be a major boost leak.

Lastly...where is your MAF? I dont see one anywhere.
 
I'd really replace that air filter and the intake. That intake is EXTREMELY rusted from the outside and might be on the inside to. If there is any hint of rusting on the inside REPLACE IT you can't have any fragments going through your turbo with out destroying it.

You also appear to have a leaking valve cover, I'd change the gasket on that. It is REALLY easy and there are kits for every DSM gasket on Ebay, the only one they don't come with is the head gasket, they are like 50-60 bucks.

I'd also probably get rid of the cruise control. Trust me, you don't need it. I've driven almost 2000 miles straight with only stopping for gas with out it. No matter how far you think you are going to drive at one time, you don't need it.

What?! No way, cruise control is the greatest thing. I literally use it all the time.

yea i know the intake is a mess, the whole car really is a big project, i'm just trying to get it running right at the moment and when the weather gets a little better i would like to pull the motor out and rebuild it. the rack needs to be replaced as well with the p/s

I have absolutely no clue. I'll Go For It. . First, no one noticed the bottom left of the exhaust manifold? (Stud Missing?) If it is not original, it might be a 2g manifold. The manifold is not a FP. It is however tapped for EGT. External dump off the 02 housing(no clue which type). My better judgement says (Definitely!) not a stock turbo. I see what looks like a Aeromotive FPR or knock off, with different lines to the rail with different fittings. HKS BOV? Upgraded FMIC with piping. GM Maf may be under the air filter. (fourth pic down) If not, AEM can run speed density in which a MAF is not needed with other upgrades(sensors). MBC in between the turbo and fan in the first pic(what type?). Strategically relocated cruise control. IMO, the intake pipe is very rat rod, although I hope the inside does not look the same. This is all just a guess as I'm still learning (Thank God). Is this for Real???

i talked to the kid i got the car from and he did say it was a 20g turbo, would u mind explaining to me what a 20g is, and is it good or bad?

the metal hose in the third picture with the red fittings, what are those called, i seen a car with radiator hoses like that and wanted to get them when I replace the stock radiator

is the cruise controll the ugly box with the 2 cables running to it, on the left side of the car? cause I think that chilling right there is ugly and I never use the cruise control anyway

the before and after pictures, this kid said my intake needed work and I completely agreed, the engine looks so much better after I sanded the rust of the intake thanks for pointing out how ugly it looked
