I currently posted a thread regarding smoke from my exuast & that was thankfully awnsered implying it may be my rings, if infact it is my rings it sounds like it will be alot of parts & $ to replace the correct way to get a solid runner out of it. so i see SBR has a 420a short block for around 1200, would it be more cost efficaint & practical to get the SBR short block or to have them rebuild my current engine?

If you can get someone reliable to do the rebuild then go with that. You should be able to save about $400.00 on the rebuild. I know that a local shop quoted me $700.00 to re-ring/rebuild the short block on my 3G GT before I decided to just get rid of it. Get some quotes from some local shops and see how much it's going to be and then make the decision.

i have been calling around all day & i only found 1 shop & he quoted me @ 1800 to rebuild it & i have not had a lot of luck finding a decent used one @ a good price either

Before you get a replacement, try running mccc or seafoam through your current engine and see if that helps. Ive worked on a several 420a's and rebuilt a few. Most of them that i have torn apart with smoking issues had oil rings and lower compression rings seized in the ring lands. Usually, its due to carbon building up around them and making them stick. I have since tried some seafoam in one that was smoking and had low compression. Afterwards, compression came back up and smoking slowly dissapeared. Im not saying it will definately solve your problem but its worth the $5 to try it.

from what i understand this engine was rebuilt 20k ago not sure who did it or how well but i hope that solves it

Give it a try and let us know how it works. When you do it, change the oil afterwards. The seafoam tends to contaminate the oil so this is a good reason to change it now. If it helps some but not completely, do it again at the next oil change. Sometimes, the carbon builds up pretty bad and it takes 2 treatments to break it all up.
