I just baught a 1991 Talon FWD. The previous owner told me i needed to install a new fuel pump. im just wondering what i can do to check to make sure it is the fuel pump and nothing else. it has a new fuel filter.

find the fuel pump fuse, turn the key to try to turn it over, use a a test light on both sides of the fuse see if the light lights up, if so, it has voltage which means its the pump or have someone try to start the vehicle and listen by the fuel pump to see if it is clicking on

There isn't a fuel pump fuse. It's fused off the ignition circuit and switched by the MPI relay under the control of the ECU or the starter circuit.

There is a fuel pump test connector under hood where you can power the pump but you should make sure it gets power under normal conditions by measuring at the power connected for the pump and make sure if gets 12v while cranking and stays on for two seconds after you stop cranking.

If the power shuts off right away the ECU may not be able to activate the MPI relay due to capacitor leakage, the ECU may not be working, or it may not be seeing the CAS signals.

Thanks alot! i will be checking it out in the next couple days and will post my hopeful success.

So i baught a 91 Talon FWD. the guy i baught it from said it needs a fuel pump. but i got the car started and it will idle for about 30 seconds then die. if i try and give it gas it bogs out and dies. but i i press the gas pedal a quarter of an inch it will rev up to 7000 rpm nice and even. once i let off it will run rough and die. idk what todo. HELP! :aha:

how do i go about checking the ECU do in need to hook up a Diagnostic module or what?
Thanks for the help i really appreciate it.

You pull it out of the car, open the top cover and look for places where it's not shiny anymore. Undamaged copper and solder will be and places where the electrolyte from the capacitors has leaked will look corroded. Even if you don't see anything, if it still has original capacitors they need to be replaced.

Take clear pictures of the whole board and post them if you need help.
