ok im trying to pull the moter on my manual gs but i really dont want to go threw the hassle of pulling the transmission with it and theres another problem if i would have to pull them both i couldnt becuase the the guy who owned it before me broke the ear off the front of the block and broke a bolt off in one of the top bolts holes that holds the trans to the moter, and i think the other one is stripped , my problem is that i have disconected everything on the moter and im ready to pull it with the engin hoyst but i cant get the trans and the moter fully seperated. as of right now i got about almost a inch gap between them, i've serched in serched on this in i cant really find what im looking for. v-faq only had the removal with the trans so that didnt really help,
is there somthing i that i havent disconected preventing it from coming apart , this is my first time working on a manual so im not all that sure
any help would be awsome thanx!

If you already have an inch gap, you might be able to stick a screwdriver in the gap and see if there's a bolt you missed or something. There's one in the back of the motor that I missed when I took my 7 bolt out that's not inserted like the rest of the bolts. Also, there are dowels at the bottom of tranny that line up with the block. Try jiggling the motor a bit while tugging. It seems like it should just come loose.

yea i finaly got it out last night , i was up till about 2 in the morning fighting with it.
in yea you was right i missed the dowel pin in the back, you'd be amazed how much of a b!tch it was LOL. when i got the car it was riged up with 9/16's bolts and regular threaded bolts holding it together, now i have to order new bolts, weld the front ear back on, get out the broken studs, re-thread sum of the bolt holes, and it needs a hole new clutch now because whoever put it in there really didn't kno what they were doin. when i unbolted the clutch off the flywheel all kinds of broken clutch springs and pieces of the disk just fell out, looked like it turned into a blender and shreaded everything.

That sucks to hear someone did a crappy job on it. Atleast now you can put it back together correctly. :thumb:

just for the record...its easier to pull the motor with the tranny still attatched...its also easier to put the tranny on the block before you put it back in....for future reference :thumb:

^^^
He's right :)

It's not like the tranny weighs that much, anyway. Just pull the CV's and the transfer case, then yank the whole bloody thing out. Set it down, unbolt the tranny, and pull it off.

Good luck putting the motor back into the car with the tranny in there. It's ALOT easier to just pull the tranny in the first place. Work smarter not harder.

Naaaaah. That is actually how I did it when I did my 6 bolt. It took me and a friend to hoist the new block in. Wasn't too bad. I was forced to do it this way because I was renting a room at the time and the garage was TINY.

nah i ended up pulling the trans too after i got the moter out , it really wasnt that hard, poped the cv joints off in shifter cables ext. in pulled it out by hand , the only reason why i had to pull the moter and not the trans at the same time was because there was only one bolt holding it together, like i said the front ear was broke off ,the rear bolt stud i found out later was broken also i think? and there was another broken stud at the top in the moter, in i didn't want to break the last bolt off by pulling them both, i wasnt that sure how much the trans weighed eather but i was surprised thow it was prolly only about 50-60lb's at the max i'd say.
but i plan on bolting the trans and moter up before i put in the car when im done. believe me i kno how that is when you do em' sepret, its'a long job!

EDIT: ADrewzki or whoever else that can answer this, you said that the rear bolt dosent go in like the rest of them. dose it go in the opposite way by bolting into the trans? becuase what im thinking is a broken stud left in it but the trans looks clean accualy like it should be and not a broken stud at all, and when i finaly got the block and trans sepreated all that was there was the dowel pin pretty much holding it together, and i kno this cant be right that there only be 3 bolts holding the thing together.

seriously theres only three!? i know theres the 2 starter bolts also but i dont think they help with holding the trans in block together or do they?

what is this about?

There is one bolt on the front of the tranny, 2 bolts on the top, 2 starter bolts (they only hold the starter though) and then one more bolt below the starter.

Yep. There's one below the starter that goes in towards with the threads facing the tranny. It was worth noting because all your other bolts with thread in towards the block. I wanna say it's the one that goes into the dowel when your block is back together with the tranny. You'll see threads on the tranny for that particular one instead of threads on the block.

ok so for the record there is in fact 4 bolts that holds it together
sorry i was just getting a little confused , i got diagrams off of autozone's website, they were alittle shady but it did give some of the torch specs wich is nice to have on hand.
if anyone knows of a different site where i can get a better diagram with all the torch specs that would be great.
