Edmonton,
I am really up in the air between the 1g or 2g talon.
I am looking to buy either generation in the spring in an AWD TSI version.
Heres where I cannot decide.
I really like the look of the 2G talon but I have been reading a lot about crankwalk and really don't wish for it to happen.
I am not saying it will or whatever but I am just being cautious.
I like the 1G talon's which are 1991 and under for the 6 bolt motor.
What I am really trying to get at is which one would be better?
I want the car to be somewhat reliable but work is expected as it is an older car and it is Turbo.
As for the use?
It will be my daily driver but parked in the winter and will some performance parts initially and eventually new turbo, FMIC,ect.
For those of you who maybe have owned both any advice?
I have done lots of research on both cars and theres both Pros and Cons.

Thanks for your help

Just so you know you can get a 92 and still have the 6 bolt motor and a 4 bolt rear end also which the 90s and 91s don't have. The early 92s (till 5/92 i think) had the 6 bolts motors. I have one and love it. You will have to check the build date in the driver's door jam to be 100% sure. Then you have the better body styling instead of those ugly pop-ups (no offense, just a personal preference). Or if you really want the 2g body style that much just find one with a 6 bolt swap already done or do it yourself. Good luck.

Thanks for the help.
I knew the 1992's up to a point had the 6 bolt in it.

Your welcome. It's really all just a personal preference. I mean the 1g guys are gonna say get a 1g and the 2g guys are gonna say get a 2g so it's just gonna be whatever you feel most comfortable with. Good luck.

Hmm...well I test drove a 97 GST beofre I bought my 1G AWD, and I can tell you the 1G feels alot more solid (though the weight of AWD does make it feel that way more anyway).

A 92 would be the best one to get. An AWD.

Besides, you don't want a girly looking car do ya(2G)?

By the way; you said you have done a lot of research on the ups and downs of both cars. Well if so, what have you come up with? Why would you need to ask us if you have? Just curious...

here ya go, do this, buy a 2g because they look better and more sexy. you dont have to buy a 6 bolt just to prevent CW. do this, if upgrading, just get bigger injectors, fuel pump, and safc, or dsmlink, and then that will take care of CW 95%. and also do this, take out the clutch saftey switch which is located on the top of the clutch pedal and that will help a shit load too. it prevents the cltuch hitting the bearing basically which there is no oil lubricating the bearing and its dry, which causes CW also. just stick with the 2g cause you i know that you want it and stick with the 7 bolt and do those mods and you wont have a problem. i had mine for a long time now and i dont have one problem of occuring CW. those mods basically take care of it. sorry if i didnt explain it so well if you dont know what im talking about but there is so much controvery on this site and so many posts about it that you can just type in CW in the search button and itsll explain it to you. i dont want to get into all that. i already put my 32 cents in. later :thumb:

.....ignore this last post. Fuel system controls are not going to remedy a mechanical crank problem. gsturboman, like me obviously has not had any crankwalk issues, but it isn't due to his fuel system selection  . Clutch selection DOES affect the likelyhood of CW occuring. May I recommend doing a search on this site.

There is a lot of GOOD, HELPFUL information already posted on this site about crankwalk on the 7 bolts. Do a little research and you'll get all the info you need.

I personally profess a fondness of the "1.5G" with the non-popup headlights. :thumb:

that's what i thought but i wasn't sure so i didn't say anything, thanks for clearing that up

Hey man I love my 1st gen with popups, it's like a factory air scoop. Anyway if you want you can go magnuss motorsports website and check out there article on crankwalk they have a lot of good information on the subject.

:talon:

For a DD that you just want some kicks out of I would go for a 2g. I think its all around a nicer car and its one that you can flaunt off cus of its sex appeal :thumb: But if you are going to do a decent amound of modification Id just go 1g. But id buy a 91. Id take a 3bolt over those ugly NON pop up headlights any day. :p

my bad, i didnt mean that, i meant to get a oil filter from a 1g. using them will let the flow better and also help with the CW issue. ignore the safc, fuel pump thing. i was talking about somehing else. my bad. a thrust bearing will fail if the oil film between it and the crank fails. there is to be no metal to metal contact at all. thats why me and some othre people take out the CSW. if its cold out side and its dry, there is no oil flowing through and pushing in the clutch makes CW even more avaible. oil filter from a 1g is bigger and can flow through faster and better. those 2 things and a little more will help with the CW issue but you can still do a search for it to find out more. sorry about the last post. i was thinking of something else. later ROFL

I did alot of reading before I bought my 90 AWD almost two years ago. After alot of reading from DSMTuners, the VFAQ and 1000FAQ, I decided that the 1g AWD is the way to go for me. It just seems like the 1st gens offer more advantages in terms of building a fast car easily than the 2gs do.

There are alot of things the 2g has that I don't find really cool either:

Crankwalk (so the fix is installing a 6 bolt. sweet, a car that needs an engine swap if you plan on modding long term. Sounds like a Honda)
### ass T-25s
heavier
more cramped engine bay, harder to work on
crappy plastic bov
not able to read knock on a logger setup
cars associated with 16 year old girls and Fast and the Frivilous :notgood:

I have two 1gs, so I am going to be somewhat biased, but have worked on a bunch of 2gs, and driven both alot, I like the 1g much better. It feels more like a sports car, and not to mention the 1g interior seems like it was made with better quality materials than the 2g. How lame is that? I always thought the best looking 1gs were the 1990-1991 Talons and the 1992-1994 high end model Lasers. But I do love the pop ups, they look sick when they are down...

i have to admit, jaxtalontsi did make some good points. exspecailly about the fast and furious thing. they did completley made the 2g a ricer in that movie and made almost every newbie that didnt know much or people that wanted style got out and get a blitz body kit. that blows, and the blow off valves due suck. i ahev to agree on those 2 subjets. thre are wayz to prevent CW on the 7 bolts and i did them and i dont have to worry so im not going to diss the 7 bolt :thumb:

Don't knock the 2g because of ''The Slow and the Silly''. Its the movies fault, not the car.

^ Yeah. Just think of the resale value because of that movie. ROFL

Same with FnF3:Tokyo Drift ... when that comes out, I guarantee you I can sell my Rx7 for $2k over what I could otherwise get it for. :D

get a 2g
put in the 6bolt with the stock 14b
leave the 7bolt ecu
leave the 1g thrtole body and intake manifold
and there ya go, you have the best of both : looks of the 2g and performance of 1g :thumb:

I have personally had a 95 GST and now a 92 tsi awd 6/4 ;). I think if your looking for a go fast car and want the ease of building then get teh 1G for sure. One thing i didnt think about when i had my 2G was junkyards, eventually your going to break somthing that you will need the next day that you cant order online and need a parts car to get things from. My prime example was breaking a shift cable in my 92, i went over to my local bone yard and found 5 dsm's there. Not all turbo models but some parts are interchangable ect. If my 2G did that id have to find somone parting one out on here or dsmtalk or somthing to try and get parts and wait a week or so to get them. It seems to me that the 1G has alot more room under the hood than my 2G did and for that it seems to give easier access to the whole font and sides of the engine. I dont know what it is but i just feel alot more comfortable working on my 1G than i did on my 2G, it may be because ive already done the stuff to my old GST but things just seem a little more sturdy in the 1G. Which is another thing, my 2G's interior really seemed cheap and the panels next to the shifter kinda fell down and some screws fell out and there was rattles and sqweeks all over. Not saying that doesnt happen in a 1G but mine so far just feels alot more solid and i love the way the "cockpit" feels. If i never had a DSM and i could find both id ###### get the 2G because of the resale value and everything but i got sick of having traction issues with my FWD and decided even if i dont like the looks of the 1G's i still want one because ive only modded for speed anyway and it already came with a 6 bolt and 4 bolt rear and is just s higher level of stock performance in a way. Theres plenty of pros and cons to both models but in the end its weather you want to be in a great looking car that everyone knows to be "fast" and maybe "furious" and want to be in the eye of all the hondas and alike at the stoplights then go 2G. If you want to be a little more under the radar so to speak and be able to roll hard on people and dont really mind the 1G body style id highly suggest that. :talon:

Also depends on your short term goals. A 1g is cheaper, so you may have a fair amount of money left over for mods. Also, in my opinion, the 2g Talon is not that great of a looking car, if I was to go 2g (which I'm not) it would have to be an Eclipse, much nicer looking.

not everyone.I would trade my 1g tsi awd for a 2g gst any day.The 2g is just so sexy.I would get the 2g as long as it's turbo I'm staright, awd is a plus though.

if you are serious about this reply i would like to talk to you... sent PM ;)

The only reason I would go with the 1g pop ups would be you can do some cool stuff with a real CAI.

I have a 1g FWD, and a 2g n/a. The 2g feels big, seems like it rides higher, you dont see too many riced out 1g's either. There is a 2g n/a near me he cut a :dsm: in his hood and covered it with some mesh.
