at the moment i have the hks hi power turbo exhaust for my 98 gsx im lookin for a downpipe but i dont know if i need a specific one or what....its a 75mm 3 in so i really dont know that much about picking a downpipe can anyone help me please! thanks:dsm:

I agree, megan are great, but if you get a pacesetter its even cheaper and you still get good gains, but when i got mine i have to cut off the flange and put GOOD welds on it, pacesetters welders are sloppy and make the welds so big the nuts don't want to go down all the way.

Sorry but a bit OT...I had the hks hi power on my 99 gsx and when I got a downpipe and removed my cat the exhaust burnt the SHIT out of my bumper! It is basically ruined for it is charred. So I guess my question is does your exhaust come out at such an angle that the tip of the muffler aims directly at the bumper? I am just curious and dont want you to end up with a ####ed up bumper like i did..

Also, if you are going the MR route, keep in mind their older versions for a GSX do not work due to a design fault. They've recently fixed it, though, so definitely ask for a picture of the product before handing over your money.

I have the Road Race Engineering Downpipe and Love it. Extremely well built, and competatively priced. They are also the only ones I have seen offer the EVO3 andled pipe.

I second that :thumb: . I run the RRE pipe as well, great quality/fitment & resonable price, plus they have excellent customer service.

nah man it comes out of the bumper a couple of inches its at an angle so it comes out it dont point towards the bumper but outside of the bumper

Since you're AWD go for the dejonpowerhouse DP. I've got it on my 92tsi and it's awesome. Only problem is you need their catback to fit with it or custom one.

But if you wanna keep it i'd say like everyone else, the RRE or megan, just make sure if you get the megan you cut off the reducer on it and weld in a small piece or there will be weird flow. I'd check to see if the apexi (aluminized) would fit up with it too, dejon has it for pretty cheap.

Yeah, I did a write up on the 2g GSX Megan Racing Downpipe last June, I'll post up a link. As "No Skills" noted, Megans first Gsx production 2g Downpipes were a horrable fit. They were designed to fit the Evo 3 o2 housing and actually mounted up correctly to the GS-T catback, but were way off on the GSX, as you'll see from some of my install photos Here

i have a "T-Pros" brand on my 2g GSX its stainless steal high qaulity 3" and bolted right up to stock o2 housing great fit, also it eliminates the cat, ill try and find where you can buy one, heres a pic

I also like the RRE downpipe option. RRE offers both cat-eliminating and non-cat-eliminating downpipes. They also carry high-flow cats. Their downpipes and cats will bolt right up to the Apexi N1 catback exhausts as well as other Apexi catback exhaust systems.

well i kind of want something that bolt-ons which out any hassle you know...i dont really wanna be running around everywere trying to get it welded and what not...because i work full time 2 jobs and go to school full time i dont have the time to do it...so its something that has to be done quick (bolt-on) ....what do you guys think of this one Buschur Racing Downpipe???

I think honestly you will need to call or e-mail companies to see what DP will fit with the HKS catback. Because sooo many companies vary slightly in length and bends and whatnot. So that would ###### be your best bet to find out what would fit the best and bolt on easiest.

Another vote for RRE. :thumb: It has held up very well in the midwest, 3years and still no rust. My Apexi N1 exhaust has an actuall hole in the back of the can now. :notgood:

RRE says they should fit to most 3" exhaust. The only welding or cutting is if your exhaust is only smaller than 3" at the point where your exhaust bolts up to the downpipe. It needs to be 3" to bolt on to the RRE pipe.

They are a little higher priced but like stated above the offer different setups depending if you want to run a cat or not. They all bolt on and off with no welding necessary.

Does your state have any yearly vehicle inspections that may be an issue if you don't have a cat? If yes then I would suggest getting the short pipe / race pipe setup. The race pipe replaces the cat, then if you need to get a vehicle inspection then bolt off the race pipe, put your stock cat inplace and presto, you are legal.....very simple. If you don't have any testing then get the full long pipe which will get rid of any cat.

I have the AWD T-Pros downpipe ($49 + 42 shipping on eBay) on my '92 FWD. It will work with a custom catback, I only had to modify it a little bit.

Do they help alot? Even if it still starts out at a 2.5inch hole then goes to a 3? I have a stock downpipe but 3" back no cat. Downpipe still help me out alot?

2.5" for the first part before the flex section is fine. Since the exhaust gas is so hot when it first comes out of the turbo, it flows better. The RRE dp will flow much better then the stocker. The stock one doesn't look all that bad but don't let the heat shields fool you, the actual pipes are very small & I believe the flex section is under 2" s.

When I swapped out my RRE dp for the stocker last fall to send the RRE pipe in for a new flex section (flex section had to be replaced because the previous owner had bad motor mounts which will damage any flex section), there was a noticeable decrease in power.

O ok thanks.... I just recieved 1250$ from my dad for grad. so im looking for stuff to buy. I want a turbo real bad but I know your not to sopose to go huge right off the bat.

From a look at your mod list it looks like you're only missing is a DP, then with the 650's and the safc you could easily run a e316g, or b16g.

Goodluck man.

ps, Or maybe get a Maft set-up, but i'd do a nice DP and a 16g.

I bought my downpipe off E-Bay from TuningPros for $101.00 delivered.
This pipe was for the 97 to 99 GSX.
It is a 2.75" inlet and 3.0" outlet.
Some issues I ran into was the original bracket that was there to mount the stock downpipe near the O2 housing had to go. While there I cut a piece of aluminium and bent it to shape as a heat shield for the lines going behind the downpipe. The 2.75" inlet was a pain to get bolted on. The corners of the nuts were rubbing against the pipe so I had to use a wrench and turn it about 1/10 turn at a time. Unless you change the O2 housing, I'd go with a 2.5" inlet to a 3.0" outlet. The other issue I had was that it was not a direct bolt on at the outlet plus the downpipe was too long. The outlet bracket was not at the same angle; like I'd want to mount up to the stock pipe anyhow but would have been nice to have the option until I got the cat-back figured out.
Other issues were that the length of the new downpipe was same length as the stock downpipe plus the Cat. I ended up taking the cat-back piece to a Car-X and they bent me a new cat-back at 2.5" diameter up to the muffler to match. I have since installed the Magnaflow muffler with dual outlets to look stock. I had Car-X weld that on for me too. They did a really good job at a very decent price.
This mod is definitely worth it. The instant power I felt from this car being able to exhale was unbelievable. I hope this helps in your decision on what to go with.
