Just got the motor rebuilt, new bearings, touch hone, crank polished all built by a reputable shop. Brand new turbo, wastegate and manifold. Put it all back together and fired it up... all I hear is this really bad noise. I can not figure it out. Compression was 180 across the board. Everything is hooked up and it seems to run great just worried about this noise. Seems to be really loud near the intake manifold ( though a sheet metal intake manifold can amplify sound).

Anyone have any good ideas?

Pull off a wire at a time and see if the sound changes. Doesn't really sound like lower end, but I wouldn't rule it out. Sounds like something is hitting something but really not making the engine run like crap.

The shop that built your motor, Do they do many 4g63's?

When you shut the car off what does the noise do. Does it stop right away or slow down with the motor?

Unless somethings hitting that exhaust or a flywheel etc etc. You got some internal engine man. Especially since you don't have BS. Only thing I could think that would make a noise like that but not affect engine speed, is a balance shaft swinging around in the block with a failed bearing...

^ Thats what I was thinking. Hey mitsu mat how are you sure theres no balance shafts. Did they show you when they were redoing it or did they have the shafts to show you.

A bad rear balance shaft tends to be a lil tricky, can sound like its coming from inside the valve cover.

Well they only built the short block and I have had the block apart before so I am 100% sure it does not have BS.

Anyway on some advise from a local DSMer here, he had the same noise after a build of his own and it turned out the #4 eagle rod was hitting the pan. So I decided to check the pan when it was running and sure enough I could feel something tapping it.

So now that I got it all together its time to take it apart. so goes the live of a DSM.

I would record a video, then just take the block back to the builder, and be like fix it gosh dang it.
Pull the pan if you want. I am willing to bet, con rod big end was on the wrong side and spun a bearing on 1 cyl..... but thats a guess....

Sounds like you have no lubrication. Check your oil level. If thats good, then your pump might not be working. Either way, I recognize that sound instantly as that happened to me.

I figured it out and called Matt already, it was the very edge of the rod bolt hitting the pan.

Aftermarket oilpans are a bit shallower in certain places, and need to be clearanced like a V8 oilpan would be for a stroker motor.

This does NOT necessarily show up when hand-cranking the motor either, I had it happen to a 2.3l eagle/wiseco build, and I had hand-cranked it through it's rotation several times before it even had the head on with no resistance.

It's just another thing to watch for in 2.3l motors, if I have pictures I'll make a tech post about it. I wonder how many others have had this issue so far?

Purrs like a kitten now!

John was right the #4 rod was just nicking the pan, cant believe it made that much noise but here is a picture of what was happening. This nick is very very small and was not even noticeable from the bottom of the pan.

one other shot just to show how small this nick was.

i have a 2.3l that i just put the pump on last night, is there anything i can do to prevent this? its a 6 bolt, not sure if that matters, eagle crank, eagle rods, wiseco pistons. dont want to thread hi jack but this has got me a little uneasy.

You could just dent the pan like Matt and I did, same area for #3 and #4, they're the two that get close.

Make sure you check block clearance too, there's a spot I had to grind down that was a little closer than I'd have liked.
