im new to turbo dsm's ive fooled around with n/t's before, but this is my first turbo car finally i worked up enough money to buy a 96 GST spyder 5spd 78k on the clock, original owner car. this is what i plan to do to it first, tell me what you think. if you have any better ideals let me know but keep in mind my budget is limited.

everything is priced out with shipping included

- autometer boost gauge and gauge pod- 78.00
- Greddy type RS bov 202.00
- ebay air intake it comes with a k&n filter- 88.00
- manual boost controller kit- 27.00

and im gonna remove that BCS rstrictor

everything comes out to 395 shipped and i can install everything myself

what do you think?????

Those are good first mods, but before doing any modding do the maintanance. Timing belt, fluids, plugs, wires, maybe even a clutch. Don't start modding until the car is in the best shape possible. Plus the bcs mod won't matter once u install a manual boost controller.

If i could go back and do it all again, my first mods would be a clutch, then datalogger, fuel pump, boost gauge and mbc.

You could even get the intake before the BOV and dont forget some sort of recirc kit for the BOV to keep your car from running like shit off throttle.

I agree with maintenance first. I would put that BOV off--in fact I wouldn't use that specific one at all since you can't recirculate it. I would recommend replacing that with a nice UICP replacement and a 1g BOV.

I (and 99.9% of the rest of the site) will recommend that you buy the recirculation kit for the Greddy blow-off valve. Venting to the atmosphere will cause your car to run rich. Recirculate until you have the correct upgrades to vent properly. Any reason why you wouldn't go with the 1g BOV, since it's less than half the cost and still does pretty much the same job?

As screwdgie mentioned, the BCS gets bypassed as soon as you install a manual boost controller. Leave the electrical connection plugged in, but you can cap off the nipples on the box. The restrictor can be left in and it won't affect anything. Don't tee into the BOV line for a boost source for the MBC; use the nipple on the T25's compressor housing for a boost source.

You've put together a fairly good starting point. After these, you should be ready for a logger to keep track of your engine's status and performance, as well as a fuel pump upgrade/rewire. You could even rewire the stock pump, in anticipation of upgrading the pump later. My advice would be to keep the boost low until you get a logger.

Also, I agree with maintenance being a priority. You might be close to requiring a timing belt change, and if you do it at the dealership and have the water pump changed at the same time, you could spend upwards of 6-700 dollars on just that. Check the wheel bearings for play, check the turbo shaft for play, do a boost leak test and compression test, and generally make sure you're not going to be looking at any costly repairs in the future before you go any further in your modifications.

the car has a new timng belt, recent fluids change everything is mechanically sound
i wanted to do the greddy because i heard it sounds great and is good performance wise.
how does the 1g compare?? also recirculating the BOV (remember im new to this turbo stuff) is it that liitle tube going from the BOV the air intake? and the greddy wouldnt hook up to that tube?
datalogger hmmn ill look in to that.

and i just put some new plugs in the car yesterday, and the clutch couldnt be better

You didn't list it so I'm assuming you didn't plan on a upper intercooler pipe.

This will be necessary to use the Greddy BOV or any aftermaket BOV....even a 1G.

If you go with a Greddy, RRE makes a nice one..... http://roadraceengineering.com/eclintake.htm

You should be able to find quite a few to choose from. You also need to know for sure what BOV you will be using before you buy one since they have different flanges to match different BOV. For example the 1G BOV has a different flange than a Greddy. You can even modify some flanges (like the 1G) to accommodate different BOV's.

The 1g BOV holds about 18psi reliably; crushed it can hold more. It's not as pretty, and it doesn't make as loud a noise, but it's cheaper and more reliable. Some Greddy BOV's fail, even the real ones. The adjusting screws strip, the membranes tear, etc. But if it stands up, it performs well.

The tube from the intake to the BOV outlet is the recirculation tube. The old Greddy Type S could attach directly to it without a problem, but the RS needs a recirculation kit. The horn is removed and a beaded fitting is screwed in its place, I believe.

I haven't had the same luck with the 1g bov. I bought a new one and while it seemed to work great, doing a boost leak told me otherwise. When I origionally tested it started to leak around 14 psi. The last boost leak test I did before I replaced it, I was leaking at around 6 psi. I replaced it with a Forge bov, you may want to look into these. Excellent quality, very nice sounding/loud even when recirculated & lifetime warranty. You can get them with a spring/shim kit to make them adjustable, with the second lightest spring it would still hold 20 psi on a boost leak test with zero leaks. Plus they can be had abit cheeper then Greddy & their customer service is excellent.

the 2g bov is crap. it leaks at about 12 psi.. however no need to spend 200 on a greddy bov when you can get a 1g for 25. as for the ebay intake, i don't have good experience with those. for about 100 you can find a used injen intake on the forums. but i still use the stock snorkel. had metal intakes and they don't make a HUGE difference..
do all the free mods.
get a 1g bov
get an adaptor/uicp for bov
port mani/o2housing/turbo
get a good mbc/make your own
get a boost gauge! :thumb:
stay boostin homie! i have a spyder too and i tried selling it but i just couldn't part ways with it..

i think im gonna go with the dejontool greddy type s copy. it looks nice it doesnt need a recirculation kit and its only $69.00 not bad. i think ill get one of their uicp pipes too.
does anyone have this bov or had experience with it???

Discussion about that particular BOV

A discussion of knock-off BOVs

In short, the Dejon BOV is indeed a knock-off of the Type-S. As per the second link I provided, you MAY have to purchase a genuine Type-S membrane if the Dejon BOV's membrane fails, as has happened with the other ebay-sourced Type S knock-offs. That is really the main difference between the Greddy unit and the copy: The copy's membrane is made of an inferior material and is not resistant to oil, therefore it has a higher chance of failure due to tearing/wear.

DiamondStarM gave a great explanation (with pics) as to the internals of the copy. He also provides a few sources to get the membrane from should you need to replace it. Posts #87 and #96 are where you can get that information in the second link.
