My car is going through EGR valves.

My 1996 GSX that is 100% bone stock is going throught EGR valves. My orignal one threw a code up and when I removed it the bottom port was 100% clean with some liquid on it. The top port has some carbon around in the port but nothing too bad. I replaced it with another one and my car threw up the same Egr code within 150 miles. The EGR looks the same again as the first one. I have one more egr valve to try but why is my car going through these????

More than likely because your car probably doesnt need the valve replaced. What was the code?

Well im gonna confess I took it to Autozone and they scanned it. They said I needed a new one. I had one laying around from a car that came into my work and I replaced it. The car seemed to run better but after a while the check engine light came on. I really dont know what the code was is there any way to check without the scanner.

This is like how if you throw an O2 code, they tell you to replace the 02 sensor. I rarely see egr valves go bad on gas burning cars. Without the code its hard to say what you have going on.

Wonder if you got valve seal blowby, or worse yet valve guides are bad..that would let tonnage of exhaust plug up the PVC valve due to the blowby ...

When you take the oil cap off, is it all frothy looking underneath..

actually the head is a full reman. the whole engine has about 2000 miles on it and was installed by a veterian mitsu mechanic. I was wondering if this would cause my mpg to be low. I am only getting 17 mpg with my car. It runs good but just eats gas.

Nope it doesnt have a blown head gasket. It isnt going thorough oil or antifreeze. It doesnt leak a drop of anything at all. It doesnt smoke or really do anything. I havent had to add a single drop of oil from its last oil change (about 2800 miles ago) and no antifreeze since the motor was put in. I looked inside the oil cap yesterday and it looked like brand new in there with no foaming or sludging at all. The only thing it seems to do is some times when I start it up after the engine idles from 1400 to 2000 rpms and will stay there. I usually either get frustrated with it and put it into gear and take off. The idle thing also happens sometimes when I pull into a parking spot and put it into park.

You need to figure out the code. Have them retest it and tell you the code number.

That's classic! Tell those dickheads that you just want the code, and they can keep their retarded opinions on what caused the code. If they were technicians, they wouldn't be changing batteries and wiper blades at AZ.

That's true. Although one of the members in this forums work at our local auto parts store, I would trust someone off of here.

If you really think its EGR check the soleniod on the firewall. If you do not have emissions where you live just block it off. I would also check for a boost leak (just in case, I doubt this is the issue though) and check your FIAV about the inconsistent idle.

The autozone thing, I know I was a little embarssed to go there and have them run the codes I wasnt going to buy one there I just wanted to figure out an idea of what it could be. I put an egr on from a parts car at my work. I will get the code number and come back here.

Fast Idle Air Valve. Its on the bottom on your TB and sometimes will cause an idle surge when it goes bad.
