My car ate my timing belt!

Ok. Here is the deal. My cars water pump went out and my Dad and I changed it. Well we didn't time it correctly and we bent 8 valves. So we took it to a shop and they redone everything. I got the car and its been running great for two months. Well one night I came home and everything was fine. Nothing wrong. The next morning my car won't start. It just turns over and over. It misfired twice. I took the timing belt cover off and half the timing belt was gone! I mean it was a clean cut! It was like splitting a normal timing belt in half. It was still tight what was left on there. I mean it literally looked like a factory cut. Questions are do you think I bent any more valves when it misfired and second what in the hell happened? It had no symptoms of anything. Thanks all!

if your car just "ate" your timing belt...i think you might have another problem on your hands....

How old was the timing belt?

IT was brand new. We replaced it along with the water pump. Could it be the idlers?

What brand of timing belt did you use? Cheaper belts are notorious for splitting.

yea, it may have been a clean break, doesnt mean it wasnt the belt itself

Thats true. I got the belt from Advance so it was probably a beck and arnley belt. Do you think I bent any valves by just turning the engine over? It never started or anything.

What kind of shape is the balance shaft belt in? It usually breaks and eats the Tbelt.

I dunno. Its in the shop right now. I'll know tomorrow what exactly happened. I'll be sure and post the results. I just hope no more valves were bent. They are all brand spanking new.

Well, they took it all apart and can't find anything wrong with it. All the tensioners are good and functioning. There are no marks where it looked like the belt might have rubbed up against something. What the hell is wrong with my car guys? .... The mechanic said something about where the head was resurfaced one side of it may be uneven? I kinda' doubt it since its done by a machine. Think it was just the belt? All replies are welcome. I say it was the belt, Ive seen it happen a few times to people, thats why I would recommend only buying Mitsu, OEM belts, other belts arent usually as durable.

One time the lower timing belt cover broke somehow and took out a chunk of my belt, good thing it didnt rip it all they way.

Well, we have 7 bent valves on our hands and possibly a busted piston.

Back to ground zero. I just replaced 8 of the valves 3 months ago due to this.

They have no clue what happened to the belt. I know its getting fixed in the next few days. They blamed it on the the head not being surfaced correctly. OH well....

I highly doubt that was the problem. If they dont know what it was, who says it wont happen again?

Exactly. I don't know what to do. They said on Monday they should know what the problem was. Could have been the belt..... When we got it it had threads coming out of it. They said it was normal and stuck it on there. So maybe it was just the belt. Since it was such a clean cut.... Wish I had a pic to show everyone... It really was the strangest damn thing....
