i went to a muffler shop thinking they could make me a custom exhaust for cheaper than i could get online. The guy goes "yea we can make you a 2.25 for around $250. I was like "could u make me a 3 inch instead." after this he kept telling me that the pipes would be too big and would scrape against the road so basically, no clearance for it. I was thinking if this is true..How do other people have it on then? Then i was like ok, make me a 2.5 instead. His answer was still the same. I keep telling him that it'll be fine but he refuses. He goes to check with one of his employees and comes back to me and says, ok we can make you a 2.5 for $300. I thought about it, but he'll still probably make it a 2.25" and will think i won't know the difference. What are your opinions on this?

I just tried the samething this weekend. Got the same reply. Asked one shop how much a 3 inch would be, and without a second to think about it he told me $1,000. I wanted to punch him in the face. Then he goes on for twenty minutes about why I don't need something that big. One more shop to try, and if they can't or will not do it, then I'll just order one.

its like that around here. 1st thing is that many muffler shops dont have 2 1/2 or 3" pipes in their shops but instead of telling you that they just say it cant be done. i showed them pictures and that's when they said "we might be able to do it,but we have to order the pipe" i was like never mind.

i had a problem like that, i asked the guy if he could make me a custom cat back and he goes whats wrong with it i'm like nothings wrong with i want a bigger one hes like o no we dont do that i'm like find you dont want my money

I hate people

My opinion is try a different shop or just order one online.

is it true though? would having 3" piping scrape against speed bumps and what not? My car isn't lowered either. And i think it's much cheaper to get it done by an exhaust shop rather than buying it online.

I had the exact same problem. The guys are probably used to n/a cars like the guys I dealt with were. He just blabbered on for 10 mins about how his camaro only has 2 1/2". I wouldn't take no for an answer and after the guy finished my exhaust he admitted he was wrong. (felt soooo damn good.LOL) Just be persistant and don't bend. You CAN run 3" and they are WRONG. Don't pay more than 500 and don't take less than 3". You can even run the exhaust straight back under the axle if you don't have your car lowered. If it is lowered than I'm not sure if it will fit.

just go to a shop that works on a lot of imports, doesn't necessarily have to be a muffler shop, they'll have a better idea of what you want and can most likely weld some mandrel bends together for you for an exhaust, that's what my friend did, kid made him a 3" turbo back with test pipe for his gsx

My 3 inch only scrapes on sharp declines never on speed bumps and my car is lowered about 2'. It will not scrape.

that place i went to is an import shop. oh well, just gotta keep looking i guess.

im sure that local shop of yours dont own a mandrel bender.
So your exhaust would end up with press bends.
People are selling exhaust's all the time used. I think thats your best bet.

Personally I didn't run a full 3" untill I got my old 50 trim then I went to a 3" DP.

Before with my t-25 and then to the big16G I ran a 2.5 DP to a 3" catback.

Second, I bought offline becuase a lot of R&D goes into most exhaust systems and they usually fit perfect. i.e. my thermal catback.

that's not true I have an apexi 3" inch exhaust and my car is lowered and no it does not scrape on speed bumps unless your going fast over the speed bumps which is not good at all since your oil pan is down there and you can open a hole on it really easy and after that there goes ## engine, and yes look for another muffler shop and tell them it can be done there are a couple of treads out there of people who have done the same thing your trying to do look for them so u can get a price range of what it should cost and good luck :thumb:

Honestly just search our for sale forums and pickup a used exhaust if your not looking to spend alot.

Tho if it was me I would give a call to RNR or someoen else that does exhaust work for our cars and see if you can get just the long part (with the bends) done and you can apply your own muffler choice.

Goodluck

apparently they are an import shop that does not understand the concept of making the most free flowing exhaust for a turboed car is important and that 3" can be very beneficial with some mods...i agree with above though look for a used one and search for opinions on all the ones out there including the ebay knock off ones ya never know what peoples experiences have been, they may not be awful i don't know if i would trust one but ya never know

Here is the issue with the custom exhaust shops.

1. Don't get an exhaust done unless they have a mandrel bender. If its a small shop, they don't have one. The machine cost LOTS OF MONEY. The reason why they refuse is because the bending machine they have can only bend 2.25 piping. The downside is that wherever there is a bend, the inner diameter is small. Ex. if I needed a 45 degree angle, the 2.25 diameter will be only 2 or less internally. The way a mandrel bender works is that it stretches the metal so its also internally the same as the piping. If they try to bend 2.5 or 3 inches, it would get CRUSHED, trust me. I paid a guy just to see him bend it so i could have the answer.

2. Custom exhaust shop people ASSUME that they are going to be putting the piping where the stock exhaust was ( you know, the maze bending ). You can't fit 2.5 or 3 inch piping anywhere near the stock placement. What Apexi does, is bend it to the middle of the car where if the car bounced, it wouldn't scrape.

just a little FYI: The GT-Spec by Apexi is almost 4 inches because Apexi has the "only" mandrel bender that can do that.

Sounds like a bad muffler shop, probably lacking the materials to fabricate such piping. Go somewhere else. I paid under $200 to have a complete exhaust system fabricated.

The place i went to made me a custom 3 inch turbo back for 140 bucks. They didn't even use a cat. I went in and asked em how much for a full 3 inch exhaust and they said press bent or mandrel i said mandrel and he goes we do alot of these so 140 bucks sound good? I said sure. The press bent was 120 bucks. If your close to IL and want to know the name of the shop let me know. I don't want anybody ratting these guys out to the EPA so pm for the shop name.
