Fu(king hillarious... It's been out of the shop for less than a day and already it fu(ks up. When I am at idle it sounds like I have a popcorn machine under my hood. This is a very loud rattling sound coming from the passenger side of the engine. Like I said, at idle, metallic popcorn sound, when I depress the clutch the sound goes away. When driving, it only does it when I shift. For example, I accelerate in first up to 3k rpm, depress the clutch to shift and this horrendous clanging rattle ensues(almost like a machine gun) until the shift is complete. I haven't tried to take above 3k because the shifts at that rpm ar so painful sounding that I am afraid something horrible is going to happen. I just had the transmission replaced so of course I am leaning towards something the shop did but I don't know what it could be. My car ran great(engine-wise) when I took it to the shop and now this. What could it be? Flywheel, rod(s)... Please help, I am about to shoot the car and then myself.

Ok, when the sun comes up I am going to attack this problem. So far I have compiled this small list of things to check. Harmonic Dampener/pulley, loose flywheel, rod bearings, TOB. Anything else you guys can think of? Am I going the totally wrong direction here? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ok, here is the latest. Car is back at the shop and the tranny is being pulled again. The mechanic was able to duplicate the conditions exactly as I desribed them and seemed very angry after driving the car.(swearing like crazy and stomping around slamming shit)Which leads me to believe that they did fu(k up and they know it. The owner guy, insists that the noise is coming from the #3 or 4 cylinder and is indicative of a failed rod bearing or a loose wrist pin. I insist that the engine has never been starved of oil(pulled 5.5 quarts yesterday, no metal at all)and that there is absolutely no reason for a bearing to mysteriously seize. The car was fine when I brought it in and hasn't been driven for a month, oil pressure is good, oil filter is clean, oil pump is operating correctly. Harmonic balancer is fine, all belts are at the proper tension and show no signs of wear. I honestly think that there was a mistake on the installation of the flywheel(torque values, loctite etc...) Anyway, they have it now so I guess I'll just wait and see what they say.

I picked up the car just now... How is this shit. 2 loose bolts on the flywheel and 2 bolts MISSING from the bell housing. OMFG, how fundamentally stupid do you have to be to not loctite the flywheel bolts as for the bell housing that's just pure laziness. The guy at the shop apologized profusely for the mistake and everything is fixed as far as I can tell from the test drive but... Needless to say that shop won't ever be seeing my car again, except as it flies by. I think I am going to invest in some air tools and a press as soon as I can. Thanks for the input and help, having back-up opinions sure that it wasn't engine related really went far in keeping my focused on the problem at hand.

Thats good that they fixed it. I hate that shit, when you pay people to do a professional job and they do the job worse then you would do it for free! Its happened to me and my family more then enough times (different mechanics each time). Needless to say, they named me the mechanic ;), its funny I do a better job then the "pros" and I have no training! Man how the #### do you forget to tighten FLYWHEEL bolts, and leave some bolts out altogether! Oh well glad you got it fixed!
