so i have been looking into installing my IAT in the manifold and was thinking, it looks like if i pull the MDP and drill out the the manifold where the MDP goes i should be able to install the IAT there. But i would still need to remove the IAT sensor and re install the MDP in the future so i can take the car to smog. my question is, i can drill out the inside of where the MDP goes and still leave the seal surface for the MDP intact. looking down into where the MDP goes right now i kind of get the impression that they have that area designed specifically that way to get a certain signal. if i do that will it mess up how the MDP reads the signal?

The mdp just reads pressure. You could always leave the ait sensor in the manifold and run a vacuum line from the manifold to the nipple on the mdp sensor. It should work just fine for your smog testing as long as they don't do a visual inspection.

If there is a visual inspection, I would leave the mdp sensor alone and put the ait sensor on the firewall side of the intake plenum.

One question though: Why not put the sensor in the uicp just before the tb? The readings shouldn't be that much different.

It is not recommended to place the iat in the intake manifold as it becomes heat soaked. At higher rpm's this isn't a problem, but at lower rpms, the intake manifold becomes hotter than the air as the air is closed off (because the throttle plate isn't opened all the way). Best place is before the throttle body to prevent this. If you NEED to place it on the IM, use a thermal barrier gasket. It will help a little, but still not enough.
