there is a talon for sale by a friend of mine's dad. Its a 1995 TSI AWD, with only 64k miles. I have been reading these forums and the crankwalk problem is kindof moving me away from buying the car. First off, how much should i worry about this car getting crankwalk anytime in the near future, and if i do decide to buy it, what are some things to look for before buying? Thank you very much for your help.

well for the crankwalk its a problem w/ the 2g's but it doesnt happen as often as you think..my 2g has 171 k miles on it and ive never had aproblem but as for check b4 u buy...check the belts mainly the timing, check to c what oil was ran in the car....plugs wires....

hope it helps
jesse

To add, I would do a compression check as well to see what condition the motor is in. Like thesickness said, I would also ask when the timingbelt was last done. If the owner doesnt know/remember, I would go ahead and change it just to make sure it is in good shape.

do a search, this question is asked 3 times a week

anyway, look the car up and down like you would ANY average car. That's number 1. number 2 is to take the intake arm off and check the turbo for shaft play. [even if it's blown, that shouldn't be a deciding factor]. Then go get a compression test done. If the numbers come out nice and even, and everything else is OK, go ahead and buy it.

BTW, finding a 95 TSI AWD with that low mileage is a GREAT find. If you decided to purchase the car, you'll then start doing research and realize that you have a special something called an EPROM ECU :sneaky: :D

goodluck.

p.s., crankwalk is one huge hyperbole [can you use it in that context? haha].. it happens to people, but it should never scare you away froma DSM. besides, if you don't buy it.. I may have to drive where you are and pick it up myself :tease:

Yeah, crankwalk is blown way out of proportion, i mean yes it happens to some DSM's but not enough to scare you from getting one. If you dont get it, have a reason for not getting it other than beause of CW. It's just like any other car, every car has its problems unique to just that car. Like the RSX, everywhere on their forums all you see is gear grinding from 1st -2nd gear. The reason it seems to come up so much is beacuse the site is based on just DSM's. If the site was for ALL cars it would not seem to come up so often because there all the problems of other cars too. So i would say for that mileage, purchase that AWD terrorizer and dont look back! :thumb:

I did a quick search but it was more on the topic of crankwalk, sorry about the repetition. Can you elaborate on the type of motor oil that was used in it? What type is suppose to be used and whats wrong if the "wrong" type is used. Where can i get a compression test done? Thanks a ton.

If the owner has used synthetic motor oil for the life of the car the bottom end of the motor will probably be in good shape, especially with so few miles. Regular motor oil is o.k. as long as it is changed when it is supposed to be, but it does not provide the same level of protection that a synthetic oil would with the high rpm and high temps that these motors put out. As far as compression tests go, you can stop by your local auto zone and buy a compression tester for $39.99 and do it yourself. It is very simple. How much are they asking for that 95???
