On February 8th 2005 I was driving my car like I always do (HARD) and all of a sudden i hear a boom and the car was dead in an instant. By the time I get out of the car the smoke is coming out and I know it cant be good. I knew I had blown up the engine, but couldnt have imagined how bad it was gonna be. I popped the hood and was able to see the counter weights of the crankshaft immediately along with the entire front balance shaft!!
I got the car towed home and started making phone calls, my first one was to AMS cause they are local and I needed help fast. The only thing they had immediately available was a JDM 7 bolt for $1,900. So I called SBR, and asked for Nate, but it turned out that he was busy on the phone. So I proceeded to explain my situation to Mark who had answered the phone. The only option he had was his engine that he had taken out of his car (with 6,500 miles), which was a built 6 bolt. The gearhead in me got excited so I decided to think about it. Well, needless to say the next day I bought his engine and he had it shipped out on friday.
All excited I get out to the garage and begin the rest of the disasembly process and first find that a rod had made its way out of the block and hit my starter and put a HUGE dent and shattered the case of it. I was like thats crazy, but hey it could be worse. I was ready to pull the motor out but needed to disconnect the transfer case, so I went to do that but found a rod sticking through the pan and into the top of the cast iron part of the transfer case. Sawsal time!!! I hacked apart the entire pan in order to get the rod dis lodged from the transer case. Ok now the engine and trans are out of the car but still together and i'm ready for bed, but decide to split them and inspect the trans for the hell of it. This is when I felt sick, the bellhousing was cracked from when the back of the block blew out. Well time for bed.
Call up Shep Racing in the morning and ask him my options. Well aparently the bellhousing is the most expensive part of the trans so $500 for a piece to fix a trans with 135k on it was out. I asked about used transmissions and find out that you need a 97-99 trans and a 97-99 transfer case, due to the gearing. There are NO 97-99 tranny's to use as a used model or even as a core, so I end up buying a Shep race Tranny w/ 4 spider center diff. I also pick up a used 23 spline transfer case just to use the cast iron case with the gears from my transfer case which were not damaged.
The Service...
My Shep Race tranny was ordered on tuesday the 15th and arrived tuesday the 22nd!!! This was amazing considering he had NO CORE to work with and had to order a brand new one from mitsu before ever building it his way.
I paid for the engine on wednesday and got it the following tuesday, enough said!!
Now for the pics.....
