my friend took his 95 gsx in b/c the idle was hopping up and down from like 1500-2000 and the exhasust was popping in high rpms...the mitsu dealership siad that he needed a new mass air flow sensor...will gettin a new one fix both of his problems

Depends if that is the actual problem. The dealer should be able to monitor the mas outputs and tell him if it is the problem.

I would look for a used one instead of paying the dealer price for a new one.

Dealerships can make mistakes. I took my car in for that same problem and they told me it was the MAS, and I almost got a new one, but I looked in my Haynes manual, and it told me to adjust the idle screw on top of the intake manifold, and that fixed it like a charm. Check that out first.

dealers are morons. dont' listen to them, and do give them your money. go to a private shop have them look at it. people at dealerships don't know how to work on cars, they just learn the basic things andhow to basically fix it. they just give generic answers, and way over charge. take it to someone who knows about cars. that problem sounds generic to almost all cars...well turbo cars. go to a private guy. i wanted to get my 95 awd tsi, diagnos and the dealer wanted 60 bucks, for a 5 minute job. i took it to a local place and they did it, and give me extra advice and such, then said. just give us 20 IF you want. so much better.

yea i think hes gonna go that way too..the dealer wants to charge 500 for a new mass air sensor and 75 for install...we can put it on even if we do buy it and i think some1 we know has a sensor for free....he said to look at the coolant temp. sensor too...any1 else have a problem w/ that sensor

i have the same thing tested it with a good maf outta my buddies car same thing. so thats wasent it in my case, im cleaning and replacing everything in my tb right now so ill tell you if that fixes it.

Yes. The engine looks at the coolant temp to know how high to hold the idle. If the sensor or the line to the sensor is messed up it could give bad readings to the ECU. A short in the line could also give readings that fluctuate, which will make the ECU vary the idle speed. The ECU also makes the A/F mixture richer when the engine is cold, which could result in popping exhaust.

It might be something else. Check out the idle surge VFAQ at VFAQ.com

Borrow a friends logger and watch the coolant temp.
