When i put the car into reverse it makes this (clouchchch) sound, sometimes if i put it in first then into reverse it wont do it, does it about 50 % of the time. any suggestions on how to fix the problem ?

My cars been doin that lately but that's because it's idling real high, about 2000RPM's so it doesn't like to go into reverse to well.

yea thats pretty much the only solution ive come up with is putting it into a 1st or 3rd then reverse, but still anyone know the cause ?

I dont really know why, all I could tell you is that reverse gears are straight cut , maybe that has something to do with it? Hell, its not the fact that the car is old, I saw new subarus that crunch into reverse.

All cars "crunch" into reverse. Reverse is not synchronized, therefore you need to brake the transmission before attempting to put it into reverse. Shift to any forward gear and then go to reverse, it will go in much smoother and make your tranny last longer too.

mine does the same thing if i forget to shift to a forward gear first....also try releasing the clutch all the way and pressing again then shift...

Yeah, I've been doing that since day one, since I got my civic when I turned 17 back in the day. It just grew like a habit on me, I always put it in a forward gear before I put it in reverse (to some people it may look dumb but it gets the job done :thumb: ), figured it out myself too ;)

hmm i thought it was a given to go from 1st to R if you wanted to go into reverse. thats how i was taught at least, and i never tried anything different. i guess its a good habit.

all five forward gears are always in place, however the reverse gear opperates without synchros, the gear actually moves in to place instead. The problem is, if the car is in neutral the shaft is spinning so when you push the clutch in, the shaft is disengaged and starts to slow down but if you don't wait, putting it into reverse will grind (the gear against the spinning shaft).

all you have to do is....push in the clutch and wait a second or two for the shaft to stop and then put it in reverse (if it doesn't quite go in let out the clutch a tiny bit and it will go right in while you back up) the alternative is to put it into any forward gear which causes the shaft to stop spinning and then put it into reverse without letting out the clutch.

this should eliminate all grinding. its really simple to just wait 2 seconds before putting it in reverse and the gear never grinds.
(period of time may not be actually 2 seconds....experiment to figure out how long to wait)

the problem with your car could also be a possible master cylinder leak. My clutch master cylinder is leaking fluid (the rubber surround near the clutch petal tore), and now it pumps air into the clutch which makes the clutch feel mushy, and reverse is tuff to put into gear. Look at the rod going into your fire wall from the clutch, if the rubber is torn, youneed to get a new master cylinder.
