I'm about to purchase the MAFT for my 1g talon. I read the very informative article about the MAFT. I'm just trying to get a clear answer as to whether just running the MAFT and a stock ecu will really make my car run like crap? I've read a couple places that the MAFT should be used in conjunction with a DSMLink, AEM or some other management. Is this true?

Depends on what you use your car for and the level of modding done to it. The MAFT does well in tuning for WOT situations, but low to mid throttle tuning is a little more difficult as the ECU uses different maps depending on certain variables (hence where DSMLink and AEM come into play). In a sense its similar to tuning with an SAFC.

Well, i'm trying to make it a daily driver with a 16g, bigger injectors, some kind of engine management, GM MAS, Walhbro 255, AFPR, FMIC and JDM engine.

i would just go with a 2g maf. Your driveabilty will be so much better. With a maft you lose some sensors like air temp and berometric pressure so when the weather changes you will have to retune. PITA

Correct. The MAFT Clamps the Baro and intake temp seen at the ECU (80 degees F and 30 inHg). The newer MAFT alows for the stock MAF to be used in conjuction with the translator so it's deffinitly not as bad. Any time you use a diffrent MAF you are going to run into HZ calibration issues. DSMlink allows you to minipulate the airflow sliders to compensate for uncorrect MAF's. Which can be a good amount of work..

For the sake of a DD, I wouldn't change the stock MAF..

My understanding was that pressure, humidity, temperature, etc effected to voltage needed to cool the MAF wire so that it at least crudely mimicked the stock sensors.

With a 16G you will never out flow the 2g MAS... Why mess with a good thing? I will not switch to a GM MAS untill I simply cant use my 2G MAS anymore... I see some DSMers running a 14b and GM MAS, I dont understand that.

The sucky thing is I have a limited amount of space in the 1g MAF stock area. When does the 1g maf max out? The 2g maf is sooo wide/big compared to the 1g...

That's what i'm working with. I think I just wanted to change to the GM MAS for space reasons.

The GM Mas is bigger than you think.

I'm going to try Speed Density instead. Less room, more reliable.

Yes, but it can be used anywhere along the piping, thus keeping it out of the crowded area.

For what it's worth mine works well. I prefer it to my 1G MAS. Those things like to give me problems. :(

i had no issues with it. i sold the cra before i did big mods but i got the MAFT for a hell of a deal. The only issue i had was a "dead" spot when i would punch it from idle. I asked around here a while back about it and the answers were all the same. it was due to using it blow thru and on a 1G. This problem quit as the car warmed up and the trims were set. It does allow easy BOV venting though, if your into that. Looking for another one to purchase now, preferably working but i'll check out the non working ones too.
