I know that our trannys (manual) take the type of lube they do because they have brass synchros....what i need to know is if lucas is safe on those brass synchros...anyone know?

Thanks,
Nate

Lucas will make the gear oil really foamy. I would say go with some good fluid like BG, redline or royal purple.

Just make sure it is gl4 compatible.

i dunno about that royal purple stuff its soo thin - seems like ricer oil to me

I have had very good results with 1 quart redline, then filler up with redline MTL

Redline MTL has been known for years to destroy bearings. Please stay away from it. A 50/50 mix of it might be decent, but I don't know why anyone would bother when they could just put Syncromesh, or hell, regular non-synth Valvoline, in.

well, when I first got into dsms - i was coached a little bit by Scot Gray - he reccomended that mix so I must give him credit for it. If you wanna question Mr. Gray himself go ahead ;)

i had Lucas in my vtec prelude, and could barely get it into gear it was so thick. i now use Pennzoil synchromesh. same as BG but 1/2 the price for 3 quarts.

Woah, there. Pennzoil Synchromesh is the same as GM Synchromesh. BG Synchroshift is a different product, different company (but still for the tranny).

You are right about Pennzoil being 1/2 price of GM.

its basically tghe same thing as BG

They're both manual transmission fluids, but in my experience they're not all that similar in action.

I ran with BG for a while, and shifting into 1st and 2nd was a chore. It would never really want to go into gear, and I'd have to play around with the shifter to get it into gear. When I put in the Pennzoil/GM stuff, shifting became much easier--like butter. So, I can't call them basically the same when the results were dramatically different.

As with all this stuff, everyone has their own experience and favorites.

My trans was hard to get into 1st gear and notchy from 1st to 2nd. I changed it out to GM Syncromesh and the problem went away with in 100 miles of driving. The trans is right back to perfect again and shifting is acctually better than before. I highly recommend the syncromesh (GM or Pennzoil same shit, Pennzoil makes it and sell it to GM who sells it for more money) it worked like a charm on my trans.

I was considering a redline oil. We have used Lightweight Shockproof on our race trans for a while and it seemed good what what you do on a race car has little to do with a street car IMO. After the results with the syncromesh I'm glad I made the decision I did.

When I refilled my Transmission I used 1/2qt of Lucus along with the Synchromesh. I like how it shifts compaired to straight Synchromesh. I rebuilt my transmission not too long ago (maybe 6k miles ago). I think the factory recommended something like 75w90 for our transmission and I just thought that straight Synchromesh was way way to light. That stuff is like water and that is why I added Lucus. Why would it foam? On the containter it even says you can use it in transmissions.

Thanks Defiant,
Just picked up a 95 GSX and this will be done when I change oil, plugs, and wires, thanks again ;)

Hmmm my experience with Redline-MT90 is neutral, it didn't get any better but it didn't necessarily get worse either. I recently switched to Penzzoil Syncromesh, and I think emphasis on think, that the grinding noise has decreased but it still does grind going into 2nd. Although I remember with Redline it would grind during high rpms going to 3rd but I haven't experienced that with the Syncromesh yet.
