Well I just want to get rid of this car at this point in time. I'm going domestic because I'm just done with import brands haha and I know the dsm is domestic.

Well it happened today, if I put it in reverse and go back then brake I can feel something on the brake pedal like a bump while I'm pressing it. When I shift into first, and I brake it makes a loud popping noise and I feel it immediately on the brake pedal. It gets louder the faster that I'm going. It scared the shit outta me when I first experienced it so I had to go home with emergency lights using the emergency brake. Anyone know hwat it could be? Its drivable but its just scary. I can recreate the sound whenever I want.

You could have very bad break pads. I had some on one or my earlier cars that broke and when I pressed on the brakes it sounded horrible. When I took th tire off and moved the caliper they fell out in pieces.
You could have bad rotors, or bad calipers. Take off your tires and check

What I don't get is why does it happen when I go into reverse, brake and then first gear and brake. After I brake the first time in first gear it doesn't make the sound anymore but I heard a weird noise coming from the front as i'm braking. I can't take my tires off, the prevous owner put on tires with tight access to the nuts. A normal tire iron doesn't work.

The popping sound is a one time thing after the first brake but if I go faster it gets louder than before.

have you looked at your rims? sounds like a bolt on your calipers came loose causing the calipers to move when you first break. they would move one way in reverse.. the other in first. If that happened your calipers could be hitting your rim causing the sound your hearing. you'd be able to tell by looking at your rims.

And you said you cant take the wheels off? If they're aftermarket rims you just need a lugnut key. Might even be in the trunk or glove box

They have no special pattern, its just that a tire iron doesn't fit in. I have the size tire iron for the rims but yeah, I can't get it in there since they are in too deep. Its hard to explain.

Thin wall socket maybe? There's bound to be a way to get your wheels off.

Its the walls of the socket that get in the way, they're too thick. I might go to autozone to pick up a socket that will let me take em off. I really need it fixed by tomorrow.

If a noise while braking is scaring you away from a dsm then you bought the wrong car in the first place.

Going domestic isnt going to help any either.

Maybe a bicycle?

Ah a bike seems reasonable at this point in time. Plus its great on gas unlimited miles to the gallon!

A noise while braking will scare me away because I don't want something unknown to fail and cause me to crash and burn. Its not knowing what the problem is that scares the shit out of me. At least if I go domestic I'll have a running car :D, until that breaks too that is.

In all seriousness I'm just not feeling the imports, I drove my friends iroc z28 in which he dropped a 454 turned 496 bbc in it, it was just too damn sweet.

Yeah and ill whoop your ass in any gsx or awd tsi from a dig or spank that ass on the highway in any GST or TSi for 10 grand less.

GL finding an old camaro that hasnt been run ragged, much less a z28 iroc.

I don't support street racing even on the highway, keep it on the track... Plus bench racing isn't really 'cool'. I don't plan on buying an iroc. If you aren't going to help, don't post. Thank you.

On Topic: I got a socket that will fit the rims, I have to check tomorrow early in the morning though because its getting dark. I'm hoping its just my brake pads because today when I went up my driveway, my front left side of my bumper hit the ground as I went up. I never noticed before, I hope my driveway is just too steep.

You have no clue how good the irocs are out of a dig or you wouldn't say that.

From your description it sounds to me like a ball joint. But there really is a myriad of possibilities. Does it make the noise when you go over a bump? Also, automatic trans?

I have not gone over a bump for awhile. It is a manual trans. How would I go about checking the ball joint? from what I've seen on the car, nothing is wrong. I'm going to check the brakes tomorrow and maybe I can take a look at the ball joint when the tires off. Is it obvious if its the ball joint, in appearance?

Not usually obvious unless it's really bad. It's not always very easy to tell at all, even cycling the suspension with a pry bar while the car is on stands might not show an obvious problem.

Sometimes the ball seizes inside the cup also, so the breakaway torque test sometimes gives a false indication of the joint being good. And then you hit a big bump and it separates completely. If it's the lower lateral arm joint, the compression arm will fold the front tire into the fender and door when the other joint separates. That can be pretty bad even if you're only doing 15mph when it happens.

Put the car on jack stands and wiggle everything. Spin it fwd /rev while wiggling until you locate the problem.

Found the problem after taking off my rims, I was missing a bolt on the caliper... Must've fallen out somewhere without me noticing.

Glad you found it! Had the same thing happen to me on the highway, caliper fell forward, dug a pit into the rim and brought me to a very abrupt stop.

*cough*cough*

......nailed it.

Thanks everyone, and I don't hate dsm or anything, I love them but yeah I've always wanted an iroc z28 or something around that era. In the future I'll probably get me a 1g awd DSM, I don't fancy the 2gs that much.

Thanks for the help haha, it was funny whne I took off the rim and the brake caliper pretty much slid off.
