So im thinking of getting a new DSM, GSX. iv read about the crankwalk in other threads and i guess its not as common as i thought. Before people would tell me not to get an eclipse because of crappy trannies, Crankwalk and shitty eclitrical work. But I fell in love with my 97RS and Really want to get a GSX. so since i know nothing about AWD and turbos what should i look for besides the miles? by that i mean what should i feel for? or hear for? how do i know if the turbo is good? of the motor? i mean i dont expect to get a new car because i do plan on getting it rebuildt and investing some money in too it about another 5grand in about 7months of owning it. mean i want somthing that will last me as long as i own it, I know that I need to keep up with the matinace. what do you guys say?

Thanks guys!

well first off, (not trying to be a dick) but the crankwalk in your name might make alot of people on this site mad, and not reply to you. That is just because so many people say that they are worried about cw, and that is why they wont get an DSM. There are so many of the threads out there, that people are just starting to ignore them now.

BUT...since your a noob, i will help you out! The first thing, dont worry about cw, its very very over-rated (which you even said you know its not as common as you thought), so were off to a good start. Then the trannies on these cars are good and strong. If you "launch" off the line with an AWD car, that has 4 slicks on it, of course you will break something after a few passes. But that is why you must "learn" to drive you AWD car (as many people will say). I am not saying you cant beat on your DSM, because you can. Some people beat the crap out of theres every single day and never have any problems. That is where the maintenence and care comes in. If you take care of your car, and are always checking things, then you can sometimes "safely" beat on it. Please dont be worried about the trannies on the AWD cars. They will only break if you do stupid stuff, and dont take care of them! And if for some reason you are still worried about the trannies, then get a GS-T. That is what i have now, and i used to own a 96 rs. Talk about a huge upgrade! Also, with the GST you would save roughly 400 lbs over the AWD. If you are just getting a daily driver and occasional racer, then a GST wouldnt be a bad idea at all.

When looking at a GSX or GST there are numbers of things you can look for and feel for. Do a compression check on all 4 cylinders(make sure they are all about the same, and somewhat high), check the oil(make sure it isnt milky), check the coolant(make sure it isnt black), check to see if the check engine light is on, look in the engine bay and see if everything looks like it is "plugged in" and good to go and check the turbo shaft play. Also, check the brakes, tires, check for rust, there are sooo many things to check for, but those are just some of the basics.

Then, you said that you dont expect to buy a "new" car because you plan on getting it rebuilt. Well why not buy a car with a very good engine, then instead of completely rebuilding it, add on most of the bolt-ons first. Once you get all of the bolt-ons, on, then worry about internal stuff. But i guess that is your call with what you want to do?!?!

So to wrap this up, our cars are very reliable and extremely fast. Just make sure that the previous owner took care of it, and when you buy it....treat it like you own it. Take care of it!!! Also, dont be worried aobut crankwalk and tranny problems. Your tranny will treat you the way you treat it, and crankwalk is just a big overrated thing.

2DaTrakNow sumed everything up quite nicely, but also when you take it for a test drive, drive it how you will drive it once you buy it. Also get it put up on a lift and check the oil pan out for bottoming out, and to make sure there isnt oil leaking from there, and check the oil lines going to the turbo for oil as well, bring a friend when you go to test drive it a have them drive behind you to see if any smoke comes out when under heavy boost.
