Looking at a Tsi AWD ...what should i be looking for??

im goin to go look at a 93 Tsi AWD it has about 97000 miles on it and i dont really have to much experience in DSM's other then my friends GS-T.... so if you guys could help me and tell me what i should be looking for in the car and listening for i would appreciate it ....thanks Pat

Check compression in all cylinders, pull off the intake pipe and check for excessive shaft play in the turbo (There will most likely be some play with that amount of miles, if it's stock), pull off timing belt cover and check the tension on that, ask about the timing belt changes... when, what was changed, make sure the tensioner was changed, etc... Ummm... then check for the usual stuff, clutch pedal feel if it's stick, make sure gears shift smoothly whether or not it's auto or manual....

That's all i can think of that is specific to DSMs that you can check in a small amount of time, i'm sure someone else will have other things to check

How could i tell if there is shaft play on the turbo .... and i was wondering since i am goin to a dealership how would i get the compression checked or can the dealership do it for me??

For the shaft play, you have to take the intake pipe. See if it moves side-to-side and in-out. If it does but doesn't hit the sides you might be ok. This is not a real problem though, you can get a 14b replacement for $100.


If the dealership has a shop for repairs they should be able to do this for you. If not, ask if they will be able to get you a test result or let you take it to get tested before the buy. If you are serious enough about the car, they might let you.

For this year and the mileage of the car would i have to check for crankwalk ??

A 93 will have a 7bolt, but crankwalk is less common in 1gs. It will be pretty tough to check the crank on a car you want to buy, since you have to take a lot of stuff apart. But if you're worried about crankwalk, just drive the car and turn left and if the clutch doesn't stick to the floor you're OK... for now at least.

while im looking at the car should i look for any oil leaks and if so where should i be looking ....and should i check if the transfer case has been fixed because of recall

te valve cover usually leaks. it just a gasket tho. also check the manifold for cracks. look at the dip stickl to see oil color as well as inside the oil cap. check fluids as well. iof they arent fukll you know they didntmaintnance the car when they got it. also when your driving rev 1st gear to about 4k and put itin 2nd tho see if it grinds. as well as 3rd.

also make sure the radio works. when i got mine i had to rewire all my speaklers and fix a shitload of interior boo boos (mising panels). i was able to talk he price down about 900 from minor flaws i could find
