I just bought a 1g GSX for $800. The engine is shot, and so is the auto trans. Very good fixer-uper. My plans for the car so far are GT35R, FMIC, upgraded fuel system, and possibly cams. Problems of course. What exhaust manifold should I get to mate the GT35 with the engine? Should I stay with auto, or convert to 5-speed? What would be a good start for me? Constructive criticism anyone? The car already has a 16g turbo on it. Should I run that for a bit? Give me some feedback please.

I would:

1. Get the engine rebuilt, rebuild it yourself, or buy a used one.

2. Buy a used tranny or get yours rebuilt. Or you could swap to 5 spd. Its all personal preference and both are capable of being fast.

3. Keep the 16g run it while you get the supporting mods for the 35r. Do all maintenance before worrying about the go fast stuff.

I say 5-speed FTW. Only because I love a manual trans. What I will not say is our transmissions hold up well. Mine, currently, is going out because of a 1st gear syncro. However, if you got a "built" one, it would last better than mine has (Mine has only 71k original miles on it)......Get it built right and a 5-speed is awesome, not to mention helpful in the winter, or just for recreational fun. There are threads here that can explain the swap. I'm not sure how hard it is, but I would do it. But that's my 2 cents.

5 speed and auto basically just comes down the personal prefrence. I would rather have a car that's stick to be honest cause I don't like driving an automatic but that's entirely up to you. As for the car get it running first if the engine is shot and go from there. Also try to get a mod list of what's done to the car seeing as somebody obviously played around with it if there's a 16g on it. If the motor and trans are shot mods should be the last thing on your mind. Don't do any more mods to it until you get it running strong.

and swap to a manual auto's are junk.

I'm a newb, sorry. But what's with the "wheelie bars" on a FWD car? Dang I feel like an idiot asking, but seriously......

Edit: Auto's may be fast, but are they fun. I say "No". Especially when I hop in one and slam my foot into the non-existent "void" of a pedal. And then *sigh* put it into drive, and then wish I was driving a "stick" again :)

Stock tranny with simple line pressure mod and 160k miles. Auto cars just dont get enough credit man. I love my auto.

i guess i just have had some auto's with bad luck, my winter beater talon while i work on my summer talon has had a bad tcu, replaced that and soon after gears 3 and 4 have vanished ive scanned the tcu for codes but it tells me out of spec 2 and 4 so i drive it with OD off to stay in 3.

when my auto trans ''did'' work i love the no lift shift, getting over on local ricer, oops LOL hondas.

Ha, yea I love how its just continuous pull with the auto. Stick is more fun around town I will admit. I love them both actually, I just have to stand up for the auto. You know how it is LOL But anyways, to the OP, just worry about getting the car running, do the maintenance, and then make it fast. These cars are all fun no matter wich one you have. I have an ungodly slow 1.8 that I drive to school, but its still fun.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I just figured while the motor and trans were out, i would do all the work to it and save myself the trouble of ripping it apart again. can someone give me a link to a good site that i can find a manifold for the gt35?
