Limp Shifter

So yesterday I finished up my install of my 3" thermal exhaust and polyurethane shifter bushings and I decide to go for a cruise. Going around a turn my shifter totally went sideways (leaning towards me). My first thought was "OHHHH shit WTF " so I coast into a target parking lot. I remove my center console and see the strangest thing.

On the shifter, there seems to be an axle type piece that is/was welded onto the part that goes side to side. On the axle the shifter moves forward and back.

My question: Is this axle piece supposed to be welded to the part that goes side to side? If so, mine broke out of there. I temporarily fixed it w/ zip ties, but am looking for a little better fix. Is there any other way to fix it (good fix too) w/o welding or is welding my only secure option? Thanks!

boosted98gsx has a thread where he is trying to get people together to try and get a recall for this problem.

but id either weld it or use brackets and bolts to get it back on there secure enough. but of course the weld would probably be the better way to go.

I'd not heard of this being a problem, but apparently for a few people it is. I'd not hazard a guess what you guys are doing to your shifters.

thanks for getting that link up there defiant...

and i hope that these people with these broken shifters aren't really shifting that hard to break the welds. ive only seen a few people with them broken. hopefully for their sake it is poor welds and design and not them slamming it into gear, cuz you'll have more than a broken shifter down the line if thats the case.

just thought id put that out there...

I don't get how you assume I'm slamming the shifter into gears or abusing my car in any way. I baby my car and rarely boost for more than one second at a given time. I never grind gears, etc... I want my car to last, so I treat it accordingly.

Could it have just been a bad weld? Probably. It definalty was not because of the way I shift...

I guess I'll just go get it welded while I have the center console out. Thanks for the input that I needed.

hey man i didn't ASSUME that you were slamming it, i was just stating the fact that IF you were that is abusive to your tranny. i wasnt saying you did anything, i was just stating that because of what ive seen, ive seen people shift so hard and you don't need to with our cars.

but anyways it could have been a bad weld, ive seen some bad welds on my car, but not the shifter. i guess mine is fine, but yeah, just take it and have it welded by someone you know or a shop. i talked to someone a while back about welding something for me just about as small as that would be and it was like 15 bucks. so you shouldn't be too bad off.

Yeah, I went in today and had it welded and the guy did it for free and said come back when you need any work...

Back to enjoying my new exhaust!
