Lexan VS Sheet metal heat shield for air intake...

The needed sheet of lexan to duplicate this: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=194759

is like $15+ shipping. VS Sheet aluminum which is probably close to $10.

Which would be better for blocking the heat?

With the lexan I could easily hot glue them togeather or epoxy them togeather, the sheet aluminum would be done just as in the link above.



Which do you guys think is better if ya have the $$?

spend the money and go with lexan..i did...

also, "plexi-glass" works great...just go to you local hardware store(menards, homedepot, etc)

Lexan (polycarbonate) and plexi-glass (polymethylmethacrylate) are both poor conductors of heat. Aluminum is an excellent heat conductor. However this shouldnt really matter as the heat transfer from the air to the to the barrier (aluminum/plexiglass/lexan) back to the air is negligable.


Air (filter side - cold) | barrier (heat transfer) | Air (engine - hot)
<------X------- Heat <-------X------ Heat



The total heat transfer from the engine air to the filter air is negligable because heat is not effectively transfered to and from stagnant air. The effective heat transfer coefficient from filter air to engine air will be very small regardless of what material you use.

In short, it really shoundnt matter what material you use. I would just use whatever material is cheapest and easiest to cut to shape.

Home Lowe's Warehouse should have Lexan. Or, most glass shops. I'd prefer using it over Plexiglas under a DSM hood.
