hey guys i need help I got my top end apart. Is what happend was my car overboosted due to faulty wastegate and i did a compression test. This was my results 55,180,165,155
my main questions are was i running to rich or lean?? I was just going to go ahead a replace the rings cus thats what im guessing is wrong. do u think it will be ok to just change the rings with the pistons looking like this??? help Serious answers only please!!!

Looks fairly clean but it also looks like you did a rebuild not long ago, how much boost did you get up to? Did you let it go like that for a while?

Since your this far you might as well check the head and block and see if anything has low spots. Deff. a new head gasket. How many miles since the rebuild, would suprise me if it were the rings.

if I read your veichle profile right you have never rebuilt your engine right??? (did you clean off the pistons when you did the head work?) if that is the case, I would just put in new rings and if you want throw in some forged std. bore pistons to turn the boost up a little higher than 8psi. Also, it is very hard to tell if your are running rich or lean, but in my opinion it looks ok, maybe a little lean. The best thing to do is get the block cleaned up well for the headgasket, maybe run a 1mm oversized headgasket to lower the compression a little if using those pistons and then go to a dyno with a wideband and do some tuning/logging. good luck and have fun!

also, my friend is looking into the treadstone kit and is it the treadstone wastegate that failed (I think it is a turbonetics??) thanks

It looks like #4 cylender(furthest right) got some more attention when the motor was running. The pistons dont look like they have been worn, so if this is a stock block it was running pretty good. Probably a bit more lean than rich, since there is no builtup, or deposits on the trays of the pistons. You didnt clean these off before the picture either did you?
And clean the surface of the head really good, as well as the block to make sure that a good seal is being created when mating the head to the engine.

DanTHMan 1983: I was running about 11 to 12 psi when this happend. the motor has around 50,000 on it. I didnt run it long at all. As soon as i seen it go that high i let of the gas.

Crazy skier: when i bought the bottem end it wasnt completly brand new. I did clean the pistons off when i did the head work. The block still has alot of cross/hatch and looks really good so u think if i just put a new rings in it'll be fine?

Hereitcomes: these pictures were takein right after i took the head off yesterday i didnt clean them at all thats the way they look right when i took the head off.

Do u guys think I should REHONE the cylinder walls in this case?

-you should rehone the cylinder walls if your doing all new rings. This will let them seat better

UPDATE: k today I finally got to work on my car. Me and my dad were installing new rings in today and sure enought piston number 1 the ring lands had broke so what do u guys think I should do now?

When I saw that you where turbo and you only had 55 on cylinder 1, I assumed you had broken ring lands. This has been documented to happen when boost spikes occur. Well I guess it was a good thing your rod didn’t shatter, otherwise you would be looking for a new block. If it was me, I would just suck it up and buy forged internals and call it a day. If you decide to get another oem piston, there will come a day where you will most likely have to take it apart again due to brakeage.

LOL well I guess its time to fulfill you parts wish list.

my kitchen floor used to look just like that...

lucky you! you get to build up the bottom end, like you always wanted. Get stronger, lower CR pistons, will be MUCH more boost friendly.

Then, since its all torn apart, might as well get those rods :) If you can afford such things. This would be the time.

Please do hone the cylinders. OE MLS hg's are awesome. If you dont have already, get yourself a wideband and meter (or EGT at least) to tune with. Be sure to use NGK copper plugs.
