Ok so I just bought my 94 Eagle Talon TSI AWD. I am at the gas station filling up and I notice that when the gas pump finally stops pumping my car is leaking gas all over the ground. I look to see where it is coming from and it is most certainly the gas tank. Now here is the thing... I get in the car and turn on the car and my gas gauge only reads 3/4 full. The last time I filled my car up it only went up to 3/4 of a tank as well before the pump shut off. I instinctivly thought this was just a problem with the gauge since it is an older car but it appears to be that either my gas tank has a leak or there is a seal somewhere that is bad on the tank. Now I have never owned a DSM before so maybe one of you guys could tell me if the gas tank has any seals that have to be replaced or if this is indeed a leak somewhere somewhere on the tank. If it is indeed a leak is there something I can use to patch it up as I would much rather do that temporarily than have to buy a used gas tank and swap it out. I am curious while I am down there where my fuel pump is located as well since I would like to see if the previous owner installed a performance fuel pump. If he did do the performance fuel pumps look different than OEM ones in any way?

Thanks alot!
Chris

I had a leak i *thought* was from the tank, but it was actually a corodded fuel line coming off the fuel pump assembly going into the engine. The gas sprayed out, and dripped down the gas tank, and off the tank/tank cover making it appear as if the leak was from the tank itself.

I would check to make sure it isn't a fuel line, and i would first start by checking the fuel pump assembly[ holds the fuel pump, fuel guage sensor, and fuel filter in the tank]. In my 2G the fuel pump assembly was accessed from the back seat [ take out back seat, and remove metal cover and i could see the 3 lines coming off fuel pump assembly. ] If yours is set up the same, you should try taking out seat, removing metal fuel pump assembly cover and start the car to see if gas leaks from a fuel line like mine did. if not then it might be the tank somewhere.

I would first pick up a haynes or other service manual for your car, and follow thier procedures to remove/check the gas tank.

check autozone for it, will probably run you 25 or so bucks.

Sounds good. I will do that for sure and let you know what I find, I am guessing it is a fuel line to as it would make no sense for there to be a hole in the tank.

If it only does while you fill up on gas, check youre filler tube. It may be rusted to hell and have a crack in it. Thats what mine had. It is very easy to replace.

hey guys i dont mean to steal this thread but i just filled up today.. i went into the gas station to go to the bathroom, and when i came out, all around the ground was a HUGE spill. so i looked underneath to see if it was indeed my car leaking, and sure enough it is... ive got gas before and this hasn't happened so can anyone tell me why its going on now!?:banghead:
