Ask Me,
Virginia
You all have really been there for me since I purchased my 93 TSI AWD for beater use. As you probably know, I also own a 91 GVR4.
As a reminder the 93 TSI AWD has a 6 bolt that someone put in, but the guy blew the head gasket.
I have been working with you all closely to get the head gasket replaced and the timing belt changed and you all have been very good to me.
However, my fears are taking over. I'll be the first to admit it.
My commute is 130 miles round trip per day. It can take me 3.5 hours to go one direction when things go wrong. (No I can't move closer it is just one of those things).
The idea of the vehicle was to build an extremely reliable DD that I enjoyed driving. I'd also tune it for lean burn using Ostrich and Tunerpro like I did on my GVR4. My goal was to enjoy the .29 coefficient of drag on the highway for fuel economy and just drive it in the right lane between 58-68 mph. I planned to keep it essentially stock and get some all season tires that are great in snow (maybe even some Low Rolling Resistance tires to experiment with).
I planned on using the lightest fluids that the masses advise I could possibly get away with in the drivetrain to further aid fuel economy.
A 35 mpg 1g. A unique car that looks awesome, is cool as heck to have, and is very flexible. I like the idea of theoretically switching parts back and forth between the 2 as well even though I just have a concrete slabbed carport large enough for one car.
...but fear has taken over and so has temptation.
Why not take the 4 bolt rear, Mishimoto Radiator, etc. donate them to my GVR4and part the car out then sell the shell?
Wouldn't I want something more simple for my daily commute that is less likely to break, get stolen, get towed incorrectly?
Am I strong enough to keep the DSM essentially stock for commuting or will it just become a money pit? Who wants a stock DSM anyway? Heck it's lighter than my GVR4 and smoother. It's a better athelete. The GVR4 is just turning into more of my planned drag car and emergency duty winter car though. (Crappy gas mileage due to large frontal area and cut bumper for FMIC, poor CD of .34, new track being 1/8 of a mile so aerodynamics are not as important, and extra set of rims with dedicated winter tires). The DSM would ultimately be a better drag car, but as you can see for the reasons above it didn't turn out that way. Kind of reminds me of my male dog being 1/10 the size of my female dog. It just kind of turned out that way, even though his life must stink in that regard.
All of the parts have been purchased, but they can all generally go the GVR4 along with the wealth of information that I have obtained here.
Only I can decide, but I'd like to hear what you have to say.
Thanks
