Hi just got a 4g61t from a 93 eclipse fwd from a junk yard for 50 buck was a promotional thing anything you could carry 20 feet was yours so i strapped it to my back LOL anyway i was wondering if this motor is good or junk if built or is the 4g63 the better of the three. Didnt notice what it was till i got it home curious if its not worth the hassle or better to build it. Thanks

From wiki:

The 4G61 displaces 1595 cc (82.3 x 75.0 mm bore/ full length stroke). This engine was not always DOHC 16-valve and used either Multi-point (MPFI) or Electronic Control (ECFI) fuel injection. A turbocharged version was also produced for the Mirage and Lancer. The 4G61 does not have balance shafts like the other 4G6x motors. Instead, it has different components, some of which can be used on the "Silent Shaft" engine.
[edit]Performance
4G61 91kW-124HP/650
4G61T (USA/Canada only) 99kW-135HP/6000 191Nm/3000
4G61T (Japan) 160HP-117.68kW/6000 220.65Nm/2500
[edit]Applications
1988–1992 Mitsubishi Mirage / Mitsubishi Colt (MPFI)
1988–1992 Dodge Colt / Plymouth Colt
1988–1992 Eagle Summit
1992–1995 Hyundai Elantra

Are you sure its a 4G61 if you found it in a FWD DSM? It seems odd that anyone at all would put that tiny engine in there, unless your talking about the 1.8L from the base models which is actually the 4G67 or 4G37 or whatever number that thing was.

No pics just got it today was tired when i got home i looks identical if you glance at it i did notice there wasnt a balance shaft and the valve cover is close to the one on my 4g63 90 motor but doesnt say 2000 and has the words moved. Ill try and get soem pics tomorrow. i was looking for a 63 when i went and saw this so i grabbed it like i said for 50 buck it wasnt a big loss.

Nope it was a 1993 mitsu gst with a 1.6 says on the passenger side of the head. and was only fwd

its also stamped where my 2.0 says 4g63 it says 4g61 thats the only reason i knew what to call it i didnt know they went this small i looks like the same block and head on the outside i didnt know if i could boar it and make it a 2.0.

Im just currious to see if its worth building in to a built motor or save my money for a 2.0.

it has a shorter stroke and smaller pistons. The deck height is shorter to accomidate the shorter stroke. The cylinder head is good, a lot of people like the higher compression you get from those 43cc chambers as opposed to the normal 47cc. It most likely has 1g runners, but if it has 2g runners its worth more (like 40 bucks instead of 20).

seriously though it won't be hard for you to recover your 50 bucks if you wanted. Valve cover should be easy to sell, cylinder head, maybe the block to someone on 4g61t.org, maybe the crank, other than that there isn't much you could get for it.

post pics of it if you'd like. If the alt, p/s, intake manifold, exhaust, etc are still on it, congrads on carrying it 20 feet, that makes it not only heavy but akward too.

Sounds good i guess ill try and use the head then for higher comp. and get rid of the restThanks everyone for the information and help!

Look on the exhaust side of the motor and by No.1 exhaust port should be a flat place on the block stamped with the block's ID number - what motor size this unit is.

Saw a 4G61 in an 1989 Eagle Summit out in a yard the other day - just a slightly mini version of the '63.

If you want a 4G61T pictures look myintro

The 4G61 head has 43cc combustion chamber but small intake and exhaust ports !

For a good head (like 1G big port ) with 43CC chamber, you need a 4G67 1.8L head ...

Well, look also if the ECU is Eprom and the tranny PN ( KM210? )
I doubt after that !

Some Colt owner swap the 4G61T with a 4G63T bloc, and sold the donor car with a 1.6Liter bloc ...

Thats sounds like it makes sense that it might have been a doner car but it was all hooked up and running whole motor. since i dont think i have any use for it ill probly just try and sell it off cheap and recoop my 50 bucks and leave with the story.
